Here is the third day of profiles for the competitors attending the 2011 Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin. Three of the four competitors profiled today have not traveled the national circuit extensively this year, but that does not mean that they can’t do significant damage this weekend in Nashville.
Check back for the last batch of profiles tomorrow on Extemp Central, when we will provide information on Peter Vogel, Matthew Yasuoka, Kevin Ye, and Nabeel Zewail. Also, late tomorrow evening come back to Extemp Central to vote in our 2011 MBA poll. Cast your vote for who you think will win this year’s MBA Extemp Round Robin.
Forrest Richardson
*School: Savannah R3 High School (Savannah, Missouri)
*Class: Senior
*NFL Points: 2,001
*Previous Invites to MBA: None
*National Points Race Rank: NR
*Last Year’s National Points Race Rank: 24th (85 pts.)
*National Circuit Finishes This Season: N/A
*National Finishes Last Season: CFL-Semis; NFL-7th (USX)
*Notes: Is the first extemper from Savannah R3 High School to be invited to the Round Robin…The second extemper from the state of Missouri to be invited in the history of the Round Robin. Jason Bell was the first in 2009, but did not make the Exhibition Round…Although he has not travelled the national circuit this season, or last season, he earned his way into the field with his high finish at NFL Nationals in United States Extemp…One of four semi-finalists in United States Extemp in this year’s field. Jared Odessky, Kevin Ye, and Susan Czaikowski are the others…Matchups against those competitors, as well as Nathaniel Donahue, may be a preview of this year’s NFL United States Extemp final…Was the winner of the Dowling Catholic Paradigm Tournament this year, where he defeated some of the big extempers in the Midwest…May not have a chance to win the National Points Race this year because of limited national travel, but can play spoiler for those that are seeking the title.
Karthik Sastry
*School: Montgomery Bell Academy (Nashville, Tennessee)
*Class: Junior
*NFL Points: 504
*Previous Invites to MBA: None
*National Points Race Rank: 13th (42 pts.)
*Last Year’s National Points Race Rank: 56th (12 pts.)
*National Circuit Finishes This Season: Wake Forest-Semis; St. Mark’s-3rd (USX), 4th (IX); George Mason-Quarters
*National Finishes Last Season: CFL-DNA; NFL-DNC (USX)
*Notes: Is the MBA invite to this year’s Round Robin…Biggest national circuit finish this season was a pair of finals at St. Mark’s, which made him the third best overall extemper at the tournament for this year’s National Points Race…Has the lowest amount of accumulated NFL points in this year’s field…Is one of four juniors to be in this year’s field and the chances are high that he will be a part of the tournament next year…A strong finish would bump him into the top ten of the National Points Race, as he sits just eight points behind Jason Kim and Jason Singh, who share the ninth spot in the current rankings…Will have a “home court” advantage when it comes to the tournament…Was a finalist at Wake Forest last year, placing fifth…Quarter-finaled at Glenbrooks and the Barkley Forum last year…Was a semi-finalist at last year’s St. Mark’s tournament in International Extemp…Will try to build on Aaron Lutkowitz’s third place finish last year and give MBA an Exhibition Round finisher for the second consecutive year.
Jason Singh
*School: Green Valley High School (Henderson, Nevada)
*Class: Junior
*NFL Points: 1,211
*Previous Invites to MBA: None
*National Points Race Rank: T9th (50 pts.)
*Last Year’s National Points Race Rank: NR
*National Circuit Finishes This Season: George Mason-4th (Patriot Games), 6th (Round Robin)
*National Finishes Last Season: CFL-DNA; NFL-Octos (USX)
*Notes: Makes history as the first extemper from Nevada to be invited to the Round Robin…One of four juniors in this year’s field and one of five West Coast entries…Was one of the competitors who made it in off of the George Mason bubble…As with all bubble entries and based on online message boards, a controversial invite because he made it into the field over Ross Slaughter and Emily Martin. He beat Slaughter, who was a third place finisher at Glenbrooks and sits second in the National Points Race rankings, in the George Mason University Patriot Games Tournament, but placed behind Martin in the Patriot Games and the GMU Round Robin. However, status as a junior in that GMU final helped him get in when the final tournament cut was made…Was one of two underclassmen in the George Mason University final, which is an impressive accomplishment. As a comparison, Dylan Slinger rode that momentum to a CFL national title and NFL final round national title in United States Extemp last year…A strong finish would help him earn an invite into next year’s tournament…Is one of five competitors sitting in the top ten of the National Points Race that were invited into this year’s field…A top six finish would help him break out of a tie with Jason Kim in the National Points Race…Will try to gain experience against other competitors in the field who he will likely see at NFL Nationals in United States Extemp if he chooses to do that category…Has an octo-final finish at the California Invitational on his resume as well.
Amode Tembhekar
*School: Leland High School (San Jose, California)
*Class: Senior
*NFL Points: 784
*Previous Invites to MBA: None
*National Points Race Rank: NR
*Last Year’s National Points Race Rank: 40th (40 pts.)
*National Circuit Finishes This Season: Princeton-1st
*National Finishes Last Season: CFL-DNA; NFL-Quarters (USX)
*Notes: Is one of three California extempers in this year’s Round Robin field…Represents Leland’s fourth bid to the Round Robin and is the third extemper to be invited from the school…Leland last received a bid in 2007, when Akshay Rao placed fifth. Later that season, Rao won the CFL national championship and made the final round at NFL Nationals in International Extemp…May have a low NFL point total, but that is not indicative of ability if a national circuit resume is any indication…Was the winner of last year’s California Invitational and that victory, combined with a victory at Princeton this year and a strong finish at NFL Nationals paved the way for an invite this year…Is one of many United States extempers in this year’s field and if they do that category again at NFL Nationals this year, matchups against Forrest Richardson, Susan Czaikowski, Kevin Ye, Jared Odessky, Nathaniel Donahue, Alessandro Pauri, and Jason Singh will be ones to watch…A high finish may not translate into a National Points Race title later in the year because of limited travel and the controversial decision of Extemp Central to still have the California Invitational as a fifth tier tournament, but it could complicate the ability of other extempers to make a move this weekend.
