The competitive and close 2012 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin concluded several hours ago and at awards it was announced that Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa, who is the #2 extemper in the National Points Race, won the tournament by nine ranks over Isabelle Taft of Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia. Nellans was the second sophomore to make the Exhibition Round, but she set a new record by becoming the first sophomore to win the tournament. With Nellans and Taft taking the top two spots, this is the first time in Round Robin history that two female extempers have finished first and second. Nellans becomes the fourth extemper in the fourteen year history of the tournament to win the tournament and the Exhibition Round. She is also the first extemper from Iowa to win the Round Robin and the Exhibition Round since Brian Garfield of Dowling Catholic High School pulled off the sweep in 2000. John Cherian of Bellarmine College Prep in California rounded out the top three, while National Points Race leader Nathan Leys of Des Moines Roosevelt finished fourth. Another notable fact about this year’s tournament is that only one of the tournament’s top five competitors was a senior (Teagan Lende of Ronald Davies High School in North Dakota), setting the stage for another exciting Round Robin next year in Nashville, Tennessee.
Here are the results of this year’s tournament. The top six will receive National Points Race points and the National Points Race will be updated by Friday.
