R&D: Zimbabwe’s Election

[fblike]

This year’s R&D will be topic specific, unlike past year’s where it was a hodgepodge of various articles from a particular day.  The R&D will be presented with small tweets, which will make linking easier.  Each R&D will include seven to ten pertinent articles on a hot domestic or international news topic, with the goal of helping extempers grow their files on that topic.  R&D will be provided on Thursday and Friday, but premium subscribers will have access to another R&D on Tuesday, which will cover the subject of the premium topic brief.  The premium topic briefs also link to articles used in the creation of the topic brief, so extempers or teams that subscribe will have access to 10-15 articles on that topic.  Last week’s brief covered Detroit’s bankruptcy and next week will be about Edward Snowden and it’s impact on U.S.-Russian relations.

Today’s R&D focuses on the controversial outcome of the latest Zimbabwean elections, which were won, unsurprisingly, by Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF (The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front).

quiz-01Welcome to the return of the Extemp Central news quizzes.  These quizzes will be posted each Wednesday at midnight CST and will be only in short answer format.  Unlike the old quizzes, answers will be posted inside of the quiz, but will be spoiler tagged under each question.  This way, you can get immediate feedback as you scroll through.  This will also allow additional details to be provided about a question, if warranted.  This year’s quizzes will test your knowledge of world leaders, domestic and global situations, major concepts, and other pertinent information.  We hope that these quizzes will be a useful for extempers and coaches during the 2013-2014 season.

Topic Brief: Detroit’s Bankruptcy

[fblike]

On July 18th, Detroit filed for bankruptcy, making it the biggest municipal default in American history.  Contemporary observers of the city would be hard pressed to tell that it was once one of the fourth most populated cities in the country and produced three-quarters of America’s war machine in the Second World War.  Detroit’s bankruptcy has been decades in the making, a consequence of political corruption, deindustrialization, globalization, “white flight,” and poor budgeting.  Given that Detroit’s tenure in bankruptcy court will likely last until the end of 2014, if not beyond, extempers will face a host of questions this season about how Detroit got to this point, how it can fix its debt, whether the federal government should come the assistance of the beleaguered city, and what impact its bankruptcy may have on the rest of the United States, namely those cities who are approaching the same fiscal cliff that Detroit has already driven off of.

This brief will provide a brief overview of Detroit’s problems, how those problems are being addressed at present, and then discuss implications of its bankruptcy.  Readers are also encouraged to use the links below and in the related R&D to bolster their files about this topic.

R&D: Detroit’s Bankruptcy

Here is the premium, topic-specific R&D that accompanies today’s topic brief on Detroit.
