2014 Barkley Forum: Anderson Secures Third Kentucky Victory in a Decade Over Fellow TOC Qualifying Champion Ansari

[fblike]

emoryThe most notable, and biggest, tournament on last week’s calendar was the annual Barkley Forum for High Schools, held on the campus on Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The tournament is one of the more recognized regional national circuit tournaments, usually drawing a field of the best extempers in the Southeast. The tournament final featured a showdown between two TOC qualifying tournament champions and Brian Anderson of LaRue County High SchooL (KY), the winner of the Western Kentucky University Hilltopper Classic in December, defeated Nida Ansari of Riverside High School (SC), the winner of this month’s Laird Lewis Invitational, by three ranks to win the tournament title. Anderson was a sixth place finisher at last month’s Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin and his victory marks the third time that a Kentucky extemper has won the Barkley Forum in ten years, which is more than any other state. Isabella Paretti of Cypress Bay High School (FL), who was a participant in last year’s MBA Round Robin, placed third. Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL) was the defending tournament champion, but opted not to defend his title at this year’s tournament.

With sixty-three competitors in the field, all of the extempers that reached elimination rounds received a qualifying leg for this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Three extempers – Emma Jackson of Danville High School (KY), Andrew Langford of Lake Highland Preparatory (FL), and Sanjay Supan of Nova Senior High School (FL) – earned their second qualifying legs and secured their at-large berth into this year’s TOC field. Eight other extempers earned their first leg. All of the extempers in the tournament’s final round had already qualified to the TOC.

There will be two TOC qualifying tournaments this weekend: The Pennsbury Falcon Invitational, hosted by Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania and The Apple Valley Minneapple Speech Tournament at Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Of the two tournaments, the Minneapple should attract the stronger field and will feature many of the same competitors who fought it out at the Chanhassen and Schwan’s tournaments the last weeks.

2014 Columbia Invitational: Primack Wins Second TOC Qualifier of the Year in Dominating Fashion

Fifty-two extempers arrived on the campus of Columbia University in New York City last weekend for the annual Columbia Invitational. George Mason University Patriot Games Champion Jasper Primack of Newton South High School (MA) netted his second TOC qualifying tournament victory of the season in dominating fashion, winning by thirteen ranks with a cumulative score of fifteen. Graham Piro of Iona Preparatory School (NY) took second. Last year’s Columbia champion, Gabe Ferrante, went on to win the National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament, so one wonders if the tournament will have a correct prognostication for the second straight year.

All of the extempers who reached elimination rounds earned a qualifying leg to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Seven extempers – Teresa Chen of Stuyvesant High School (NY), Justin Cooper and Devon Kerr of Scarsdale High School (NY), Michael Faucher of Regis High School (NY), Johnathan Neshiwat of Iona Preparatory, Collin Quigley of Holy Ghost Preparatory (PA), and Ryan Ward of Natick High School (MA) – completed their at-large TOC qualification, while five other extempers earned their first TOC qualifying leg. All extempers who earned a qualifying leg are indicated in italics in the results listing.

2014 Schwan’s Speech Spectacular: Stromme Outduels Nellans to Claim Second TOC Qualifier Championship of the Season

[fblike]

The state of Minnesota played host to its second 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifier in as many weeks as Marshall High School and Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota played host to the annual Schwan’s Speech Spectacular.  The tournament typically attracts a strong Midwest field and this year forty-two extempers competed in the varsity division.  Adam Stromme of Eagan High School (MN) claimed his second TOC qualifying tournament title of the season by one rank in the final round over Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA).  Stromme, an NFL finalist last year in United States Extemp and winner of the Dowling Catholic Paradigm in December, and Nellans ended the tournament with the same cumulative total of seventeen ranks, but Stromme bested Nellans in the final to break the tie.  This is the second consecutive runner-up finish at a Minnesota TOC qualifier for Nellans, who narrowly lost last week to Haley Brahmbhatt of Chanhassen High School (MN) at the Chanhassen Speech Tournament.  Brahmbhatt made the final of the Schwan’s as well and placed fifth.  Montgomery Bell Academy participant Jack Glaser of George Washington High School (CO) was also in the final round and took sixth.

Novice competitors faced off in a separate division of the tournament and Jarrek Holmes of Kent Denver School (CO) defeated Kevin Bi of East Ridge High School (MN) to claim the title.  The novice division is not eligible for TOC qualifying legs.

The tournament broke to quarter-finals, but since there were fewer than sixty competitors in the field only those extempers that made the semi-final round and beyond earned TOC qualifying legs.  Three extempers earned their first qualifying leg to this year’s TOC, but no one finished their at-large qualification at the tournament.  Those extempers that earned a TOC qualifying leg are indicated in the results listing.

The last of the three Illinois-based 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifying tournaments, the Downers Grove South Varsity Tournament, took place last weekend at Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove, Illinois.  The tournament featured an all-Illinois final and Parth Patel of Huntley High School emerged as the tournament champion over Saumya Jain of Neuqua Valley High School.  Neuqua Valley and Wheaton Warrenville South High School each had two finalists and Neuqua did better as Jain’s teammate Abhishek Nigam took third.

Patel was the only extemper that had earned a qualification to this year’s TOC before the tournament.  The other five finalists earned their first qualifying leg and are indicated in italics below.

Stategy: Answering Midterm Election Questions

A question that those doing United States Extemp or extemp in states that have mixed extemp have likely encountered this season and will continue to encounter until early November is:

“Who will win the 2014 midterm elections?”

The Gay Marriage Debate

[fblike]

Since November 2003, when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health that gay couples in Massachusetts had a right to marry, gay marriage has been a hot political topic.  Some could also argue that the passage of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996 made gay marriage a political issue, but the 2003 Massachusetts ruling in conjunction with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom ordering his city to issue marriage licenses to gay couples in 2004 made the gay marriage debate a more prominent national issue.  President George W. Bush was able to use state-level constitutional amendments that prohibited gay marriage to provide momentum to his re-election campaign in 2004 and push for a national constitutional amendment to ban the practice.  Since 2004 the proponents of gay marriage have experienced significant judicial victories, with the Supreme Court invalidating an element of DOMA last year and four states legalizing gay marriage after the decision:  New Jersey, Hawaii, Illinois, and New Mexico.  Currently, seventeen states, along with the District of Columbia, recognize gay marriage and lawsuits are pending in federal courts to invalidate state constitutional amendments that prohibit gay marriage.  Due to the growing number of lawsuits on the state level against gay marriage prohibitions, it only seems like a matter of time before the Supreme Court will have to weigh in about gay marriage again and extempers could confront questions about the constitutionality of gay marriage in  the near future.

This topic brief will provide a brief history about the gay marriage debate, break down judicial decisions that are pending concerning the issue, and then provide a brief analysis of how gay rights could impact American foreign policy.

This R&D provides resources on Australian-Indonesia relations.  As the two major powers in the Pacific, Australia and Indonesia have a complicated relationship, with both nations seeking to achieve closer ties in trade, but Australia wanting to stop a flood of refugees into the country that use Indonesia as a departure point.  Indonesia has argued that Australia’s border measures violate its territorial waters.

This R&D provides articles on the death penalty.  Questions on the death penalty typically arise in constitutional issues or domestic social rounds and extempers should be prepared to weigh in on the constitutionality of the practice.  The execution of Dennis McGuire in Ohio last week received attention because of Ohio testing out a new two drug method for lethal injection.  Observers of the execution say that McGuire suffered before dying, which has galvanized death penalty opponents to pressure states to abolish the practice.  The U.S. briefly had a moratorium on the death penalty between 1972-1976 and thirty-two states currently allow the practice.

2014 James Logan MLK Invitational: Ye Defeats MBA Participants in IX; Kang Denies Boreczky a Hometown Victory in USX

[fblike]

James Logan High School in Union City, California, one of the most successful forensic programs in the country, usually spends Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend hosting its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Invitational and this year was no exception. The tournament usually attracts a large field of the best programs in California and neighboring states and this year’s tournament did not disappoint as 107 extempers entered the United States Extemp portion of the tournament and sixty-nine extempers entered International Extemp. The tournament was cumulative and an extempers ranks followed them from prelims to finals, with the extemper having the lowest rank total winning the tournament.

In International Extemp, Alex Ye of Gabrielino High School (CA) took the championship in a final round that featured two participants at this year’s Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin. Rohan Dhoopar of Bellarmine College Preparatory (CA) took second, while Gabe Slater of Denver East High School (CO) took third. Ye won the tournament by three ranks.

In United States Extemp, Donghun Kang of Leland High School (CA) coasted to a four rank victory over hometown favorite Chance Boreczky of James Logan High School. Steven Chen of Doughtery Valley High School (CA) took third in that category.

Amazingly, despite the large number of participants in each field, which broke to quarter-finals, no extemper finalized their 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualification. All extempers who reached elimination rounds earned a qualifying leg and 50 extempers earned their first qualifying leg to this year’s TOC. They are indicated in italics below.

This weekend will be the busiest weekend of the year when it comes to TOC qualifying tournaments as five tournaments will offer qualifying legs. The two tournaments that will attract the most attention are the Barkley Forum at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and the Schwan’s Speech Spectacular in Marshall, Minnesota. The other three tournaments include the Columbia Invitational in New York City, the Alief Taylor High School Tournament in Houston, Texas, and the Downers Grove South Varsity Tournament in Downers Grove, Illinois. If any of our readers are attending these tournaments, anything you can do to help us receive timely results from these tournaments would be greatly appreciated. The most helpful information will be the the number of extempers in the field and the names of all extempers who reach each elimination round of the tournament.
