2014 Kentucky High School Speech League State Championship: Anderson Narrowly Defeats Cook to Successfully Defend Championship

[fblike]

Brian Anderson of LaRue County High School completed a successful defense of his extemporaneous speaking state title at this year’s Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) State Championship. The tournament, held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, featured forty-four extempers, and Anderson emerged victorious by two ranks over Sue Cook of Danville High School. Anderson’s repeat is the first since Logan Scisco of Danville won consecutive state titles in 2003 and 2004. Anderson’s win also gives him possession of both of the state’s extemp titles (The Kentucky Educational Speech and Drama Association hosts the state’s other state tournament) for the second straight year. Jared Thomas of Harrison County High School, who finished second to Anderson at last year’s state tournament, placed third.

Four of the finalists at this year’s KHSSL State Championship earned an automatic bid to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University by making the tournament’s final round. They are indicated in italics in the results listing.

Argentina’s Economic Dysfunction (2014)

[fblike]

Prior to the First World War in 1914, Argentina’s economy was considered one of the top ten in the world.  Following the war, which disrupted the country’s economic advantages in trade, the country has experienced political upheaval, corruption, and pursued poor economic policies that have eroded what was once a beacon of wealth in Latin America.  In 2002, the nation experienced the largest sovereign debt default in history and twelve years later some economists are fearing that it is heading down the same road.  President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who took power in 2007, has enacted populist economic reforms while attempting to consolidate her rule.  However, these policies have eroded foreign investment, sparked high inflation, and are now beginning to create political unrest that threatens her hold on power.  Extempers who read our brief earlier this season on Venezuela’s municipal elections will find some similarities between its economy and Argentina and this brief should be a useful tool for extempers that have to talk about the Argentinean economy or the rise and fall of populist and leftist policies in Latin America.

This brief will provide a brief history of Argentina’s economy, discuss its current economic problems, and then address what the government is doing and what it should do to avoid further economic calamity.

2014 Texas Forensic Association State Tournament: Sridharan and Malhotra Give Plano Senior a State Tournament Sweep

[fblike]

Texas hosted the largest of the state tournaments held last weekend as more than one hundred extempers competed in International and United States Extemp at the 2014 Texas Forensic Association (TFA) State Tournament. Despite the large field, Plano Senior High School won both categories. In International Extemp, Abhinav Sridharan won by four ranks over Azhar Hussain of Southlake Carroll Senior High School. Sridharan becomes the first Plano Senior extemper to win International Extemp since 1989. Gregory Ross of Lamar High School (Houston) took third.

In United States Extemp, Ash Malhotra became the first Plano Senior extemper to win the category since 2011 and won by four ranks over 2013 NFL United States Extemp finalist Caro Achar from Cypress Creek High School. Cosmo Albrecht of Robert E. Lee High School, who won the United States Extemp portion of the Winston Churchill Classic this season, finished third.

Four extempers in each category earned an automatic qualification to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. They are indicated in italics in the results listing.

Extemp March Madness rolls on this coming weekend as Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky (KHSSL), Utah, (3A-5A), Washington, and Wyoming will host their state tournaments. This R&D provides resources on the new SAT.  The College Board recently announced that the SAT’s scoring would be changed from a 2400 composite to a 1600 composite and that the verbal section will no longer include “arcane” words.  Wrong answers will no longer be penalized and the essay portion will be optional as well.  The College Board says that the changes will better reflect that students are learning in high school, but critics argue that the changes are “dumbing down” the test.  Common Core critics also argue that since the SAT is being aligned Common Core Standards that non-Common Core schools will be punished.

2014 South Dakota High School Activities Association State Tournament: Wenzel Wins Third State Championship; Redlin Ends Watertown’s Drought; Vermillion Sweeps Class A

[fblike]

South Dakota is a state that splits its extemporaneous speaking categories and its state tournament also divides schools into two classes by size: Class A and Class AA. At this year’s South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) State Tournament in Class A Vermillion High School swept both extemporaneous speaking categories. Robert Erikson ended Milbank High School’s two-year winning in International Extemp, defeating Morgan Jones of Milbank. In United States Extemp, Seth Miller gave Vermillion its third championship in the event in the last six years when he won the title over teammate Joe Miller.

In Class AA International Extemp, Shyanne Redlin gave Watertown High School its first extemporaneous speaking champion in the category in nine years by defeating Arizona State University champion Keegan Paugh of RC Stevens High School. In Class AA United States Extemp, Mason Wenzel won the category for the third straight year over Max Boyum of SF O’Gorman High School. An extemper has never won three straight South Dakota state championships in Class AA United States Extemp before and it is the first time since 1997 that an extemper has managed to accomplish that feat in any of the extemp categories offered in the two different classes.

All of the finalists in each of the extemp categories across classes earned an automatic qualification to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC). Twenty-two of the twenty-four finalists earned automatic bids at the tournament and they are indicated in italics in the results listing.

2014 Georgia Forensic Coaches Association State Tournament: Simonds-Malamud Brings Another Title to Henry W. Grady

[fblike]

Henry W. Grady High School continued its streak of state championships at this year’s Georgia Forensic Coaches Association (GFCA) State Tournament. Ben Simonds-Malamud gave Henry W. Grady its third consecutive extemp state championship, winning the title by two ranks over teammate Max Rabb. Simonds-Malamud’s title win follows Grady alumni Isabelle Taft’s state wins, which took place in 2012 and 2013. Henry W. Grady placed five of the seven extempers in the final round and took the top four spots in the tournament.

None of the final round competitors had previously qualified to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University, so all of them have now automatically qualified to this year’s TOC by virtue of their performance at the GFCA State Tournament.

This R&D covers Pope Francis.  Pope Francis, originally known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church a year ago today.  He is the first pope to be elected from the Americas.  He has attempted to direct the Church’s energies towards socioeconomic inequalities in the world.  Some papal observers see him as more moderate than his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

2014 Iowa High School Forensic League All-Iowa Finals: Nellans Goes Four-for-Four and Works With Pilcher to Keep Des Moines Roosevelt’s Streak Alive

[fblike]

Des Moines Roosevelt High School continued its recent domination of the Iowa extemp ranks at this year’s Iowa High School Forensic League (IHSFL) All-Iowa Finals. Lily Nellans of Roosevelt finished up a perfect extemporaneous speaking career at the state tournament, winning her fourth extemp state championship in as many appearances. Nellans won the International Extemp category this year with straight 1’s through the entire tournament and finals, winning by six ranks over Max Fenton of Dowling Catholic High School. Nellans won International Extemp in 2011 and had won the last two state championships in United States Extemp before this season. Her victory is the eighth consecutive International Extemp state championship for Roosevelt.

In United States Extemp, Nellans teammate Maxwell Pilcher took the state championship by three ranks over Jacob Logan of Bettendorf High School. Pilcher’s victory is the sixth straight win in the category by Roosevelt. Elliot Sheaff of Dowling Catholic took third place.

Eleven extempers, including the entire United States Extemp final round, earned an automatic qualifications to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University.  Those extempers that earned an automatic qualification are indicated in italics below.

Strategy: Answering Narrative Questions

[fblike]

On occasion, tournaments will deviate from asking standard extemporaneous speaking questions and will do experimental rounds that challenge extempers to think differently about global events.  One of these experimental rounds involves narrative questions, which put the extempers in the position of a world leader or other notable figure and ask them how they would decide a significant issue if they were in that person’s shoes.  Since extempers rarely practice narrative questions or encounter them during the year, they are sometimes tripped up when they find themselves in narrative rounds and I have seen a few normally distinguished extempers give less than stellar speeches in these rounds.  This strategy piece will break down what a narrative question is and provide tips on answering them.

2014 New Jersey Forensic League State Tournament: Balaji Defeats Princeton Winner Oh in IX; Harrison Finally Captures State Title in USX

[fblike]

The New Jersey Forensic League (NJFL) held its state tournament last weekend at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township, New Jersey. In International Extemp, Vaikunth Balaji of Ridge High School defeated Princeton champion Cristine Oh of Montville Township High School by three ranks. Balaji’s teammate Sejal Waghray finished in third place. Balaji’s victory marks the first time that Ridge has won the International Extemp category since 2010 and Ridge placed three extempers in the final round.

In United States Extemp, Chase Harrison of Millburn High School overcame three years of frustration and runner-up finishes at the state level by defeating Monica Coscia of Montville Township by three ranks. Harrison’s victory ends a five year winning streak for Ridge High School in the category. Thomas Abel of Delbarton School took third.

All of the extempers that reached the final rounds of each category had previously qualified to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. As a result, no extempers earned automatic TOC bids through the NJFL State Tournament.
