Operation Freedom’s Sentinel

[fblike]

Two weeks ago, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ended Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.  Beginning shortly after the September 11 terror attacks, Operation Enduring Freedom produced the fall of the Taliban government, scattered remnants of the al-Qaeda terrorist network, and attempted to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.  Operation Freedom’s Sentinel will replace Operation Enduring Freedom, with the United States leading a contingent of 13,000 foreign troops who will continue to provide training and intelligence services to Afghan security forces and support for counterterrorism operations.  President Barack Obama has called for a drawdown of all American forces from Afghanistan by 2016, with only 1,000 remaining in a non-combat capacity.  However, 2014 was the deadliest year on record in Afghanistan as more than 5,000 Afghan troops and 10,000 civilians were killed.  Since the American withdrawal from Iraq in 2011 produced the rise of the Islamic State, opponents of the President’s drawdown plan argue that the same fate could befall Afghanistan, thereby erasing the gains that NATO troops made since 2001.  New Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has also expressed hesitation about the withdrawal of more American and foreign troops from Afghan territory, warning last week that a future withdrawal should be based on mutual interests and not rigid timetables.

This topic brief will provide an assessment of Afghanistan’s progress during Operation Enduring Freedom, discuss how President Obama may handle Afghan policy over the next two years, and assess whether Afghanistan will need a sizable international presence beyond 2016.

This R&D provides resources on how President Obama might exercise his veto power in the near future.  The President has threatened to veto legislation from the new Republican Congress on the Keystone XL pipeline and the Affordable Care Act.  More vetoes are likely over the next two years, which could shape voter perceptions of both parties before 2016.

Today’s R&D provides resources on the British National Health Service (NHS).  Created in the years following the Second World War, the NHS provides British citizens with comprehensive medical care.  The future of the NHS could factor into this year’s British parliamentary election as the country grapples with how to handle rising healthcare costs due to an aging population and advances in medical technology.  Traditionally, the British Labour Party has accused its Conservative counterpart of trying to privatize and eliminate NHS services.

Russia’s Economic Difficulties (2015)

[fblike]

Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia has improved its economic fortunes thanks to high oil prices.  Oil and natural gas make up 70% of the country’s exports and higher prices have enabled Putin to solidify his rule by making economic conditions more amenable for the country’s middle class, which weathered two periods of hyperinflation during the 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union.  However, the collapse of global oil prices, in conjunction with Western sanctions, are sending Russia down the road to recession.  Considering the fact that Russia is a prominent actor within the BRICS nations and that good economic fortunes have solidified Putin’s rule, economic difficulties in Russia could create significant upheaval not only within the country, but across the world as well.

This topic brief will break down Russia’s current economic problems, how those problems may affect Europe as a whole, and then discuss what they might mean for Putin’s political future.

2015 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin: Wartel Redeems Last Year’s Loss, Wins Third Consecutive National Circuit Event; Lin Takes Exhibition Round

[fblike]

mba2010Having lost the closest Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin in history last year, Josh Wartel of Lake Braddock Secondary School (VA) left nothing to chance at this year’s event, achieving a seven rank triumph over Brian Anderson of LaRue County High School (KY) in this year’s tournament. Having led all ten rounds of last year’s competition before succombing in an Exhibition Round tiebreaker to three-time champion Lily Nellans, Wartel led nine of the ten rounds of this year’s competition, taking control of the tournament in the second round and never looking back. The title is Wartel’s first major championship and is his third consecutive victory at a prominent national circuit tournament. Wartel won Villiger for the second time in November and won both extemp competitions at George Mason last month. He will receive 150 National Points Race points for his win.

Anderson’s runner-up finish was the best performance by a Kentucky extemper at the Round Robin. His top five placing was also the first time that a Kentucky extemper had reached the Exhibition Round since 2008.

The top five competitors of the tournament were all from Southern states, creating the first all-Southern Exhibition Round in Round Robin history. In the Exhibition Round, adjudicated by the eleven competitors that did not place in the top five, Phoebe Lin of Plano West Senior High School (TX) took the title, becoming the first Texas extemper to do so since 2009. Lin took third in the general tournament, placing a mere one rank behind Anderson.

Overall, the tournament was very close with the second and fifth-highest placing extempers separated by only eight ranks. Noah Wexler of Nova Senior High School (FL) finished fourth, only two ranks behind Lin and a mere three ranks behind Anderson. Eitan Sapiro-Gheiler from Durham Academy (NC) took fifth, with five ranks separating him from Wexler.

National Points Race leader Justin Graham of Trinity Preparatory School (FL) took next out honors and will receive National Points Race points for his sixth place finish. Graham missed the Exhibition Round by seven ranks.

Here are the results of the 2015 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin:

Tournament director Adam Johnson has posted his “wacky graph” of this year’s Round Robin.  Each competitor is a line and the placings of all sixteen are shown through the rounds of the competition thus far.  Competitors do not know what line they are, though, which leads to lots of interesting (and often incorrect) guessing.  Here is the current “wacky graph”:

As you can see, the competitor currently leading the field has done so since round two.  The middle is currently a big jumble of lines, showing lots of volatility.

The pairings for round seven of the Round Robin are included below.  The topic area for this round is international economics.
