Live from the 2011 MBA Extemp Round Robin: Nabeel Zewail Coasts to Victory in the Tournament and the Exhibition Round; Donahue Takes Second

The 2011 MBA Extemp Round Robin is now a part of history.  The 2011 winner is Nabeel Zewail of San Marino High School in California.  Zewail went wire-to-wire, never relinquishing first place during the ten rounds of the tournament.  He also took first place on nine of the eleven ballots in the Exhibition Round, which is an MBA record.  Both of Zewail’s national circuit victories have been in round robin tournaments.  He won the George Mason University Extemp Round Robin last month.  He is the first California extemper to win the Round Robin and the fourth extemper in the tournament’s thirteen year history to win the tournament and the Exhibition Round in the same year.  Nathaniel Donahue of Durham Academy in North Carolina, the leader in the National Points Race, placed second in the tournament.  In the Exhibition Round, Jared Odessky of Nova High School in Florida, who placed third in the tournament, finished second to Zewail.  The topic area of the Exhibition Round was recent news, as all questions were taken from news that had transpired over the last twenty-four hours.

The Exhibition Round was recorded by the National Forensic League and will be posted on NFL TV.  Jason Warren provided some post-round comments, which will make the video very insightful for extempers.  When the video is posted on NFL TV, we will link to it here at Extemp Central.

2010 George Mason University Patriot Games: Fourth Time’s a Charm as Donahue Breaks Through

The 2010 George Mason University Patriot Games has just concluded and Extemp Central can report that Nathaniel Donahue of Durham Academy in North Carolina is the champion.  This was the fourth National Points Race tournament final for Donahue this season and after enduring three consecutive second place finishes, he broke into the winner’s circle in Fairfax this weekend.  Donahue’s victory will give him a large lead in the National Points Race going into the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin in January.  Nabeel Zewail of San Marino High School in California finished second and was denied in his bid to win the GMU Round Robin and Patriot Games Tournament in the same year.  Last year’s Wake Forest champion Emily Martin of Boone County High School in Kentucky took third and fellow Round Robin competitors Jason Singh of Green Valley High School in Nevada and Emily Bell of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Missouri finished fourth and sixth respectively.  Ross Slaughter of Walt Whitman High School in Maryland, who was a third place finisher at the Glenbrooks several weeks ago, placed fifth.

New National Points Race rankings, MBA Bracketology, and TOC qual board updates will be posted later in the week.

The following extempers were non-placing participants in this year’s Round Robin:  Emily Bell of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Missouri, Joe Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina, Emily Martin of Boone County High School in Kentucky, Jason Singh of Green Valley High School in Nevada, and Alex Song of Millburn High School in New Jersey.

George Mason’s Patriot Games Tournament, which is an Extemp TOC qualifier and a third tier tournament in the 2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race, begins tomorrow.  Zewail will attempt to become the third extemper in tournament history to win the Round Robin and the Patriot Games Tournament in the same year.  When Extemp Central gets information about breaks we will make sure to bring them to you as quickly as possible.

2010 Glenbrooks: Slinger Edges Donahue to Keep the Title in Minnesota; Monte Vista Places Two Extempers in Finals

Results are in from the 2010 Glenbrooks have just come in.  After an intense competition involving many of the names in this year’s National Points Race, Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School in Minnesota edged out National Points leader Nathaniel Donahue of Durham Academy in North Carolina by one rank in the tournament’s final round.  Slinger took three of the five available first place ranks, while Donahue took the other two.  Slinger picked up two four’s from the other two judges on the panel, but Donahue pulled a heartbreaking six after receiving two second place ranks.  This was the first major national circuit appearance for Slinger, last year’s CFL national champion and final round national champion in United States Extemp at the NFL National Tournament.  Unbelievably, this is Donahue’s third consecutive finish at a National Points Race tournament this year, as he placed second at Wake Forest and Yale earlier in the season.  Slinger’s victory keeps the Glenbrooks extemp title in Minnesota for a second consecutive year.

In other tournament news, Monte Vista High School in California placed two extempers in the final round.  Jason Kim placed fourth and Louis Li, last year’s California state champion in International Extemp, placed sixth.  Kim and Li’s respective finishes will be a boost to Monte Vista’s standing in this year’s National Team Point Race.  The other extempers to make finals were Ross Slaughter of Walt Whitman High School in Maryland, who placed third, and Kimia Dargahi of L.C. Anderson High School in Texas, who placed fifth.

Several prominent extempers saw an early exit from the tournament.  Yale winner Curan Mehra of Scarsdale High School in New York dropped in preliminary rounds, Jared Odessky of Nova High School dropped in quarter-finals, and Catherine Chiodo of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa and Nabeel Zewail of San Marino High School in California dropped in semi-finals.

Since the Glenbrooks is a third tier tournament all of the extempers who broke will receive National Points Race points.  The National Points Race standings, the Extemp TOC qual board, and the MBA Bracketology page will be updated later in the week to reflect this weekend’s events.

2010 Florida Blue Key: Calder Wins International, Odessky Wins U.S., Chiodo and Slotkin Final in Both

Last weekend, competitors converged on the University of Florida for the 2010 Florida Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament.  The tournament allowed extempers to do International and United States Extemporaneous Speaking and there was a lot of volatility in the final results.  Joseph Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina, who was invited to compete at this year’s George Mason University Patriot Games Round Robin, won the International Extemp competition, while Jared Odessky of Nova High School in Florida won the United States Extemp competition.  Odessky adds this title to the International Extemp title he won last year at Blue Key.  Catherine Chiodo of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa, who will also be competing at the George Mason Round Robin, and Brandon Slotkin of Nova High School in Florida were the only extempers to final in both extemp categories.  Chiodo placed fourth in the United States Extemp portion and sixth in the International Extemp portion and Slotkin took fifth in both categories.

Since the Florida Blue Key is a qualifier for the 2011 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC), all of the competitors listed below earned TOC bids.
