2014 Apple Valley Minneapple: Adelman Makes Minnesota Three for Three on the Minnesota TOC Swing

[fblike]

On Saturday, Apple Valley High School played host to the third Minnesota-based Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifying tournament in as many weeks and sixty extempers competed for the tournament title. Dylan Adelman of Lakeville South High School (MN), a former teammate of three-time national champion Dylan Slinger and seventh place finisher at last year’s NFL National Tournament in International Extemp, handed Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA) her third straight defeat on Minnesota turf and claimed his first TOC qualifier tournament title of the season. Adelman defeated Nellans by one rank, which marks the third consecutive week that Nellans has lost to a Minnesota extemper by that margin. Each of her defeats was to a different Minnesota competitor and in each tournament she competed in over this three week span she defeated the tournament champion from the previous week. In this tournament, she defeated Adam Stromme of Eagan High School (MN), who placed third. Stromme beat Nellans last week at the Schwan’s Speech Spectacular.

The tournament featured a novice division as well and Colin Haave of Eastview High School (MN) took first place over Olivia Shoemaker of Lakeville North High School (MN). The novice division was not eligible for TOC qualification.

Despite the large size of the tournament, it only broke to a final round. Erin Sheehan of Millard North High School (NE) was the only competitor to finish their at-large TOC qualification at the tournament and three other extempers in the final round earned their first TOC qualifying leg. All of the extempers that earned a TOC qualifying leg are indicated in italics below.

Stanford University in Palo Alto, California is the only host of a TOC qualifying tournament this weekend. It begins a series of West Coast qualifying tournaments over the remaining three weeks of the TOC qualifying calendar.

2014 Pennsbury Falcon Invitational: Langan Wins in First TOC Qualifying Tournament Appearance of the Season

[fblike]

Last weekend Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania hosted its eleventh annual Pennsbury Falcon Invitational. The tournament has been an Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifier for the last several seasons and the tournament is the second to last qualifier stationed on the East Coast for the 2013-2014 season. Emmalie Langan of EL Meyers High School (PA) bested thirty-nine other extempers to win the tournament championship and became the seventh female extemper to win a TOC qualifying tournament this season. Langan defeated Collin Quigley of Holy Ghost Preparatory (PA), who qualified to this year’s TOC last week by semi-finaling at the Columbia Invitational, by three ranks in the final round. Delbarton High School (NJ) had two finalists – Thomas Abel and Abhinav Karale – who placed third and fourth, respectively.

The tournament had just enough extempers to give TOC legs to all elimination round participants. Three extempers – Mary Breen of Gwynedd Mercy Academy (PA), Nick Giuliano of Holy Ghost Preparatory, and Jack Marshall of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School (PA) – finished up their TOC qualifications by earning their second qualifying leg. Giuliano’s qualification is notable because he earned his first leg last week at the Columbia Invitational, so he qualified to this year’s TOC in two weeks. Four other extempers, which includes tournament champion Langan, earned their first qualifying leg. All extempers that earned a TOC qualifying leg are indicated in italics in the results listing.

2014 Barkley Forum: Anderson Secures Third Kentucky Victory in a Decade Over Fellow TOC Qualifying Champion Ansari

[fblike]

emoryThe most notable, and biggest, tournament on last week’s calendar was the annual Barkley Forum for High Schools, held on the campus on Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The tournament is one of the more recognized regional national circuit tournaments, usually drawing a field of the best extempers in the Southeast. The tournament final featured a showdown between two TOC qualifying tournament champions and Brian Anderson of LaRue County High SchooL (KY), the winner of the Western Kentucky University Hilltopper Classic in December, defeated Nida Ansari of Riverside High School (SC), the winner of this month’s Laird Lewis Invitational, by three ranks to win the tournament title. Anderson was a sixth place finisher at last month’s Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin and his victory marks the third time that a Kentucky extemper has won the Barkley Forum in ten years, which is more than any other state. Isabella Paretti of Cypress Bay High School (FL), who was a participant in last year’s MBA Round Robin, placed third. Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL) was the defending tournament champion, but opted not to defend his title at this year’s tournament.

With sixty-three competitors in the field, all of the extempers that reached elimination rounds received a qualifying leg for this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Three extempers – Emma Jackson of Danville High School (KY), Andrew Langford of Lake Highland Preparatory (FL), and Sanjay Supan of Nova Senior High School (FL) – earned their second qualifying legs and secured their at-large berth into this year’s TOC field. Eight other extempers earned their first leg. All of the extempers in the tournament’s final round had already qualified to the TOC.

There will be two TOC qualifying tournaments this weekend: The Pennsbury Falcon Invitational, hosted by Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania and The Apple Valley Minneapple Speech Tournament at Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Of the two tournaments, the Minneapple should attract the stronger field and will feature many of the same competitors who fought it out at the Chanhassen and Schwan’s tournaments the last weeks.

2014 Columbia Invitational: Primack Wins Second TOC Qualifier of the Year in Dominating Fashion

[fblike]

Fifty-two extempers arrived on the campus of Columbia University in New York City last weekend for the annual Columbia Invitational. George Mason University Patriot Games Champion Jasper Primack of Newton South High School (MA) netted his second TOC qualifying tournament victory of the season in dominating fashion, winning by thirteen ranks with a cumulative score of fifteen. Graham Piro of Iona Preparatory School (NY) took second. Last year’s Columbia champion, Gabe Ferrante, went on to win the National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament, so one wonders if the tournament will have a correct prognostication for the second straight year.

All of the extempers who reached elimination rounds earned a qualifying leg to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Seven extempers – Teresa Chen of Stuyvesant High School (NY), Justin Cooper and Devon Kerr of Scarsdale High School (NY), Michael Faucher of Regis High School (NY), Johnathan Neshiwat of Iona Preparatory, Collin Quigley of Holy Ghost Preparatory (PA), and Ryan Ward of Natick High School (MA) – completed their at-large TOC qualification, while five other extempers earned their first TOC qualifying leg. All extempers who earned a qualifying leg are indicated in italics in the results listing.

2014 Schwan’s Speech Spectacular: Stromme Outduels Nellans to Claim Second TOC Qualifier Championship of the Season

[fblike]

The state of Minnesota played host to its second 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifier in as many weeks as Marshall High School and Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota played host to the annual Schwan’s Speech Spectacular.  The tournament typically attracts a strong Midwest field and this year forty-two extempers competed in the varsity division.  Adam Stromme of Eagan High School (MN) claimed his second TOC qualifying tournament title of the season by one rank in the final round over Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA).  Stromme, an NFL finalist last year in United States Extemp and winner of the Dowling Catholic Paradigm in December, and Nellans ended the tournament with the same cumulative total of seventeen ranks, but Stromme bested Nellans in the final to break the tie.  This is the second consecutive runner-up finish at a Minnesota TOC qualifier for Nellans, who narrowly lost last week to Haley Brahmbhatt of Chanhassen High School (MN) at the Chanhassen Speech Tournament.  Brahmbhatt made the final of the Schwan’s as well and placed fifth.  Montgomery Bell Academy participant Jack Glaser of George Washington High School (CO) was also in the final round and took sixth.

Novice competitors faced off in a separate division of the tournament and Jarrek Holmes of Kent Denver School (CO) defeated Kevin Bi of East Ridge High School (MN) to claim the title.  The novice division is not eligible for TOC qualifying legs.

The tournament broke to quarter-finals, but since there were fewer than sixty competitors in the field only those extempers that made the semi-final round and beyond earned TOC qualifying legs.  Three extempers earned their first qualifying leg to this year’s TOC, but no one finished their at-large qualification at the tournament.  Those extempers that earned a TOC qualifying leg are indicated in the results listing.

Here are the results of the 2014 Schwan’s Speech Spectacular (Click here for tab sheet):

2014 James Logan MLK Invitational: Ye Defeats MBA Participants in IX; Kang Denies Boreczky a Hometown Victory in USX

[fblike]

James Logan High School in Union City, California, one of the most successful forensic programs in the country, usually spends Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend hosting its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Invitational and this year was no exception. The tournament usually attracts a large field of the best programs in California and neighboring states and this year’s tournament did not disappoint as 107 extempers entered the United States Extemp portion of the tournament and sixty-nine extempers entered International Extemp. The tournament was cumulative and an extempers ranks followed them from prelims to finals, with the extemper having the lowest rank total winning the tournament.

In International Extemp, Alex Ye of Gabrielino High School (CA) took the championship in a final round that featured two participants at this year’s Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin. Rohan Dhoopar of Bellarmine College Preparatory (CA) took second, while Gabe Slater of Denver East High School (CO) took third. Ye won the tournament by three ranks.

In United States Extemp, Donghun Kang of Leland High School (CA) coasted to a four rank victory over hometown favorite Chance Boreczky of James Logan High School. Steven Chen of Doughtery Valley High School (CA) took third in that category.

Amazingly, despite the large number of participants in each field, which broke to quarter-finals, no extemper finalized their 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualification. All extempers who reached elimination rounds earned a qualifying leg and 50 extempers earned their first qualifying leg to this year’s TOC. They are indicated in italics below.

This weekend will be the busiest weekend of the year when it comes to TOC qualifying tournaments as five tournaments will offer qualifying legs. The two tournaments that will attract the most attention are the Barkley Forum at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and the Schwan’s Speech Spectacular in Marshall, Minnesota. The other three tournaments include the Columbia Invitational in New York City, the Alief Taylor High School Tournament in Houston, Texas, and the Downers Grove South Varsity Tournament in Downers Grove, Illinois. If any of our readers are attending these tournaments, anything you can do to help us receive timely results from these tournaments would be greatly appreciated. The most helpful information will be the the number of extempers in the field and the names of all extempers who reach each elimination round of the tournament.

2014 Sunvitational: Saffran Wins Fourth TOC Tournament of the Season in Mini-Extemp TOC Tournament

[fblike]

While the polar vortex brought cold temperatures to much of the country, sixty-eight extempers competed in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida for this year’s Sunvitational. Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL), coming off the heels of a third place finish at the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin two weeks ago, cruised to a dominating ten rank victory in the cumulative tournament that functioned as a small preview of the Extemp Tournament of Champions (TOC), since seventeen of the twenty-four elimination round participants had already qualified to this year’s TOC. The victory is Saffran’s fourth at a TOC qualifying tournament this season. Noah Wexler of Nova High School (FL), who won the Crestian Tradition in October, took second and Richard Diubra of Millard West High School (NE) took third. Trinity Preparatory School had six elimination round participants, which was more than any other program at the tournament.

Since there were more than sixty entries, all of the extempers that made it to elimination rounds earned a TOC qualifying leg and those that earned a leg are indictated in italics in the results listing. Seven extempers earned a qualifying leg at the tournament and three extempers, Gillian Grossen of Cypress Bay High School (FL), Joseph Grossman of St. Thomas Aquinas High School (FL), and Jacob Levenson of Nova High School earned their second leg to qualify for the TOC.

Two TOC tournaments will take place this weekend. James Logan High School in California will host its annual Martin Luther King Invitational and Chanhassen High School in Minnesota will host the Chanhassen High School Speech Tournament.

2014 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin: Nellans Edges Out Wartel to Claim Third Consecutive Championship; Ties Major Championship Record

[fblike]

mba2010This year’s Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin, the season’s first major extemp tournament, produced the only tie in tournament history as two-time defending champion Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA) and Josh Wartel of Lake Braddock Secondary School (VA) had the same forty-five rank composite at the end of ten rounds of competition.  The pair settled the tie in the tournament’s Exhibition Round with the ranks of the seven MBA tournament alumni judges determining the outcome.  Nellans and Wartel each had a “strike” to eliminate one judge’s decision prior to the round and in a 4-1 decision, Nellans emerged victorious and claims her third consecutive Round Robin title.  The victory constitutes Nellans sixth career major championship, which ties her with Kevin Troy for most career major championships.  Troy’s record has stood unchallenged for the better part of the last eight years, but Nellans will have an opportunity to break it at this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC), Catholic Forensic League (CFL) Grand National Tournament, and the National Forensic League (NFL) National Tournament.  Nellans was also the winner of the tournament’s Exhibition Round.

Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL) also came very close to making the tournament a three-way tie, as he finished two ranks behind Nellans and Wartel.  Saffran finished fourth at last year’s Round Robin.

It took a cumulative score of sixty-four ranks to make the Exhibition Round and the top five finishers of the tournament were at least thirteen ranks above the next out finisher.  This is one of the widest margins between the top five and the rest of the field in MBA history.

Here are the results of the 2014 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin:

2013 Dowling Catholic Paradigm: Stromme Defeats Ahsan as Eagan High School Tops the Field

[fblike]

Thirty-five extempers competed at Dowling Catholic High School in Dowling, Iowa for the Dowling Catholic Paradigm last weekend. The tournament was an Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifier and is traditionally the largest tournament in the state of Iowa. Adam Stromme of Eagan High School (MN), who finished fourth at last year’s NFL National Tournament in United States Extemp, won the tournament by four ranks over teammate Talha Ahsan. Stromme took two of the three first places ranks available in the final round. Richard Diurba of Millard West High School (NE) was the third place finisher.

The tournament broke to semi-finals, but since it features less than forty extempers only the finalists earned TOC qualifying legs. Danny Drane of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA), who placed fourth in the competition, earned his second qualfying leg and becomes a new qualifier for this season’s TOC. Three other extempers earned their first qualifying leg. All extempers that earned a qualifying leg are indicated in italics in the results.

With the holiday break, it will be three weekends before the next TOC qualfying tournament takes place in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Myers Park Laird Lewis Invitational. That tournament will happen opposite the Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin on January 3rd-4th.

2013 George Mason University Patriot Games Classic: Primack Bests Anderson to Win the Biggest TOC Tournament of the Semester

[fblike]

gmuThis weekend saw George Mason University host its 10th annual Patriot Games Classic in Fairfax, Virginia. 161 extempers competed and the tournament featured the winners of this year’s Wake Forest, Yale, St. Mark’s, Blue Key, Glenbrooks, and Villiger tournaments. When the tournament ended on Sunday evening Jasper Primack of Newton South High School (MA) captured the championship by three ranks over Brian Anderson of LaRue County High School (KY). Chase Harrison of Millburn High School (NJ) placed third. Primack’s victory puts Newton South High School, a recognized extemp power in the Northeast, back in the winner’s circle of a major national circuit event for the first time since Becca Goldstein won the Harvard National High School Invitational Tournament in 2008. New Jersey placed two extempers in the final, Harrison and Darius Hunt of Ridge High School, which was more than any other state. Defending champion Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA) was in the field, but failed to clear to elimination rounds.

In the tournament’s annual Extemp Round Robin, Nellans successfully defended her title and won the Exhibition Round over Harrison 24-7. Nellans and Harrison posted 6-1 records during the competition. Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL) took third, posting a 5-2 record. Saffran placed fourth in the general tournament.

All extempers who made elimination rounds earned a qualfying leg to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Three extempers, Rahul Ravinda of John Champe High School (VA), Harrison Stall of Southside High School (SC), and Andrea Zhang of Ardrey Kell High School (NC), acquired their second qualifying leg and qualified for this season’s TOC. Fifteen extempers earned their first qualifying leg and will have next week’s tournaments, as well as a batch of tournaments in January and February, not including state tournaments, to earn their second TOC qualifying leg. All extempers that earned a qualfying leg are indicated in italics in the results.

This week will feature the last two TOC qualfying tournaments of the first semester: The Dowling Catholic Paradigm, hosted by Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Western Kentucky University Hilltopper Classic, hosted by Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

2013 University of Texas Longhorn Classic: Defending NFL National Champion Rende Sweeps USX & IX; Fifteen Extempers Earn Their TOC Qualifications

[fblike]

It was a busy week for TOC qualifying tournaments and the University of Texas Longhorn Classic provided a southern qualifying tournament for those seeking qualifications to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC). While George Mason University’s Patriot Games Tournament receives the most attention on the first weekend of December, the Longhorn Classic has typically been considered one of the premier tournaments to earn consideration for a bid to the Mongtomery Bell Extemp Round Robin in Nashville, Tennessee. The tournament allowed extempers to compete in United States and International Extemp and Arel Rende of Booker T. Washington High School (OK) took both championships. Rende is the defending NFL national champion in United States Extemp and his two championships at the University of Texas give him three wins at major Texas tournaments this year, as he took the U.S. Extemp title at the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational in October. Cosmo Albrecht of Robert E. Lee High School (TX) took second to Rende in both halves of the tournament.

The tournament featured two large fields, with 107 extempers in International Extemp and 102 extempers in U.S. Extemp. The tournament broke to semi-finals and all extempers who made elimination rounds earned a qualifying leg to this year’s Extemp TOC. Fifteen extempers earned their TOC qualification at the tournament, with eleven earning both qualification legs due to their performance in each extemp category. The eleven extempers who did this were Micah Cash of Booker T. Washington High School, Nicholas Curtis, David Dam, and Darren Pomida of Westwood High School (TX), Ayesha Karnik of Flower Mound High School (TX), Jonathan Kumar of Lamar Consolidated High School (TX), Lucy Tiblier and Delaine Tubbs of L.C. Anderson High School (TX), Hinda Uddin of Foster High School (TX), Marshall Webb of Saint Mary’s Hall (TX), and Thomas Yu of the Texas Academy of Math and Science (TX). The four extempers who earned their second qualifying leg at the Longhorn Classic to qualify for the 2014 Extemp TOC were Michael Lupher of L.C. Anderson High School, Kevin O’Brien of Southlake Carroll Senior High School (TX), Jan Soto of Harlingen South High School (TX), and Audrey Zhang of Flower Mound High School. Nineteen other extempers earned their first TOC qualifying leg at the tournament. The extempers that earned a qualifying leg are indicated in italics below.

2013 Princeton Classic: Oh Takes the Championship; Montville Township Places Two in Finals

[fblike]

Princeton Univesity hosted its 17th annual Princeton Classic last weekend in Princeton, New Jersey and thirty extempers braved the weather to compete for the tournament title. Cristine Oh of Montville Township High School (NJ) took the championship by two ranks over Devon Kerr of Scarsdale High School (NY). Connor Fitzgibbon of Unionville Area High School (PA) took third. Montville Township had more extemp finalists than any other school, placing two competitors in the final round.

The extempers that reached the final round earned a TOC qualifying leg. Ellis Sargeant of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School (PA) completed his TOC qualification by earning his second qualifying leg. Competitors that earned a TOC qualifying leg are indicated in italics in the results listing.

Here are the results of the Princeton Classic (Click here for tab sheet):

2013 Villiger Tournament: Wartel Thwarts Harrison’s Title Defense; 15 Earn TOC Qualifying Legs

[fblike]

Last week’s other Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifying tournament was the 2013 Villiger Tournament held on St. Joseph’s University’s campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tournament is a staple of the Northeast extemp circuit and has an impressive list of past champions. This year’s tournament had 73 entries in extemporaneous speaking and Josh Wartel of Lake Braddock Secondary School (VA), a finalist at last year’s NFL National Tournament in United States Extemp, thwarted Chase Harrison’s title defense. Wartel defeated Harrison, who competes for Millburn High School (NJ), in the final by four ranks. Third place went to Jasper Primack of Newton South High School (MA). Wartel is the first extemper from Virginia to win the Villiger Tournament since Brennan Morris of Randolph Macon Academy, who won the tournament in 2008.

Villiger had enough extempers in its field to give all extempers that made quarter-finals a qualifying leg to this year’s TOC. Four extempers earned their second qualifying leg and earned a bid to the TOC through category three of the qualifying process. These extempers were Sophia Deng of Millburn High School (NJ), Edric Huang of Stuyvesant High School (NY), Monica Mishra of the Ursuline School (NY), and Ben Tobin of Lake Braddock Secondary School (VA). Eleven other extempers earned their first qualifying leg. The extempers that earned a TOC qualifying leg at Villiger are indicated in italics.

This weekend does not feature any TOC qualifying tournaments because of the Thanksgiving break. The following week features three qualifying tournaments, headlined by the George Mason University Patriot Games Tournament in Fairfax, Virginia, which is the last big national circuit tournament of the first semester. George Mason serves as the final opportunity for extemepers to demonstrate that they are worthy of a bid to the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin. Other TOC tournament that will run opposite George Mason are the George C. Armstrong Heart of Illinois Invitational in Peoria, Illinois and the Princeton Classic in Princeton, New Jersey.

2013 Glenbrooks: Nellans Gives Des Moines Roosevelt Back-to-Back Glenbrooks Winners; Slater Takes Second

[fblike]

glenbrooksLast weekend, 96 extempers converged on Northbrook, Illinois for the annual Glenbrooks Speech and Debate Tournament, which is the largest invitational on the national circuit held by a high school program. The field featured a healthy diversity of geographic talent, which included Wake Forest and Yale champion Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL), this season’s Blue Key U.S. Extemp winner Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA), and winners of Florida Extemp TOC qualifying tournaments Noah Wexler of Nova Senior High School (FL) and Daniel Greene of the University School (FL). Of this group, Nellans was the only one to reach the tournament’s final round and she won the tournament by five ranks over Gabe Slater of Denver East High School (CO). Christopher Jordan of Brophy College Preparatory (AZ), who was a runner-up at last year’s NFL National Tournament in United States Extemp, took third. This is the first time in at least eleven years that the Glenbrooks has been won in back-to-back years by different extempers from the same school. Nellans former teammate, Nathan Leys, won last year’s event. The Glenbrooks has traditionally been seen as a bellwether of the NFL National Tournament in June since four of its last five champions (Stacey Chen-2008, Dylan Slinger-2010, Bill McDonald-2011, and Leys-2012) went on to win national titles. Since 2008 every winner of the Glenbrooks has made the final round in their respective extemp category at NFL.

The large size of the tournament meant that everyone who made elimination rounds, which began at quarter-finals, earned a qualifying leg to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Four extempers, Thomas Abel of Delbarton High School (NJ), Adam Hamilton of the Bronx High School of Science (NY), Yijia Liang of Upper Arlington High School (OH), and Rohith Kuditipudi of The Harker School (CA), earned their second qualifying leg and qualified for the 2014 TOC.  Three other extempers earned their first qualifying leg.  All extempers who earned a TOC qualfying leg at the Glenbrooks are indicated in italics.

Here are the results of this year’s Glenbrooks Tournament (Click here for tab sheet):

2013 Florida Blue Key: Saffran and Nellans Trade Victories in Latest Showdown; Thirteen Extempers Tentatively Qualify for 2014 Extemp TOC

[fblike]

Last weekend in Gainesville, Florida, more than seventy extempers participated in the thirtieth annual Florida Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament. This year’s tournament attracted one of the strongest fields in recent memory, as seventy-four extempers competed in United States Extemp and seventy-five in International Extemp. Miles Saffran of Trinity Preparatory School (FL) , winner of this year’s Wake Forest and Yale tournaments, exchanged victories with Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA), with Saffran winning International Extemp and Nellans winning United States Extemp. Nellans defeated Saffran by two ranks in the United States Extemp competition and took three one’s in the International Extemp final, but Saffran’s consistency across all five judges helped him achieve his third victory of the year in a Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifying tournament. Josh Wartel of Lake Braddock Secondary School (VA) and Isabella Paretti of Cypress Bay High School (FL) exchanged third and fourth places in United States and International Extemp as well, with Wartel taking third in International Extemp and Paretti taking third in United States Extemp. The top four in each category were participants at last year’s Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin.

Due to the impressive size of this year’s field, all extempers who reached elimination rounds earned a tentative qualifying leg for the Extemp TOC. Like St. Mark’s, extempers could earn both legs at this tournament if they managed to break in United States and International Extemp. Eight extempers, Varun Bhatia of Trinity Preparatory School, Sydney Britton of American Heritage School (FL), Daniel Greene of the University School (FL), Abhishek Kodumagulla and Connor Leech of Durham Academy (NC), Oscar Larraza of Nova High School (FL), Giancarlo Musetti of Cypress Bay High School (FL), and William Peebles of Cary Academy (NC), completed their qualifications by adding a leg from Blue Key to their performance at previous tournaments. Five more extempers, Omer Bensaadon and Kendra Blandon of Cypress Bay High School (FL), Natalia Castro of Jupiter High School (FL), Keegan Paugh of Stevens High School (SD), and Yijia Liang of Upper Arlington High School (OH), acquired both of their needed qualifying legs at Blue Key to make the 2014 TOC field. Four other extempers earned their first qualifying leg.

This weekend does not feature a TOC qualifying tournament, but the weekend of November 9th will feature two qualifying tournaments on opposite sides of the country as the Remy Wilcox High School Tournament will take place at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington and the Titan Invitational will take place at Nova High School in Davie, Florida.
