2012 James Logan MLK Invitational: Zhu & Cherian Triumph; Bellarmine College Prep Takes Top Three in International Extemp

The James Logan MLK Invitational, which is a new addition to this year’s National Points Race, was held several weeks ago in Union City, California.  The tournament splits the field into United States and International Extemp categories.  Mike Zhu of Dougherty Valley High School in California won U.S. Extemp and John Cherian of Bellarmine College Prep in California won International Extemp.  Bellarmine College Prep led all of the other schools in the tournament by placing the top three competitors in International Extemp and having a finalist in U.S. Extemp.  Since extempers cannot enter both categories at MLK, Extemp Central does not need to worry about double counting like we do at Florida Blue Key or St. Mark’s.  As a result, all finalists in each category earn points, although teams are still capped, with their top three finishers counting for points for the National Team Points Race.

Here are the results of the James Logan High School MLK Invitational (full results can be found here):

2012 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin: Lily Nellans Becomes the First Sophomore Extemper to Win the Round Robin and Win the Exhibition Round

Scisco Note:  Since these results were posted around midnight, the news quiz will be released TONIGHT at 8 p.m. so that this can our lead headline for today.

The competitive and close 2012 Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin concluded several hours ago and at awards it was announced that Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa, who is the #2 extemper in the National Points Race, won the tournament by nine ranks over Isabelle Taft of Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia.  Nellans was the second sophomore to make the Exhibition Round, but she set a new record by becoming the first sophomore to win the tournament.  With Nellans and Taft taking the top two spots, this is the first time in Round Robin history that two female extempers have finished first and second.  Nellans becomes the fourth extemper in the fourteen year history of the tournament to win the tournament and the Exhibition Round.  She is also the first extemper from Iowa to win the Round Robin and the Exhibition Round since Brian Garfield of Dowling Catholic High School pulled off the sweep in 2000.  John Cherian of Bellarmine College Prep in California rounded out the top three, while National Points Race leader Nathan Leys of Des Moines Roosevelt finished fourth.  Another notable fact about this year’s tournament is that only one of the tournament’s top five competitors was a senior (Teagan Lende of Ronald Davies High School in North Dakota), setting the stage for another exciting Round Robin next year in Nashville, Tennessee.

Here are the results of this year’s tournament.  The top six will receive National Points Race points and the National Points Race will be updated by Friday.

2011 George Mason University Patriot Games: Taft Sweeps the Weekend; Wins Third Career National Circuit Title

The George Mason University Patriot Games, which is the last National Points Race tournament of the first semester, was held this past weekend and when it ended, Isabelle Taft of Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia defeated National Points Race leader Nathan Leys of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa.  This is Taft’s third career national circuit victory, which goes with her Wake Forest and Barkley Forum titles earned last season.  Ben Constine of Yorktown High School in Virginia fought his way to a third place finish.  Des Moines Roosevelt continued its impressive showing on the national stage this year, by also placing Lily Nellans in the final round.  Nellans finished fifth.  The round robin that GMU holds before the general tournament followed the same result order, as Taft defeated Leys and Constine finished third.

The semi-finalist and quarter-finalist results will be typed in over the next couple of days, as all competitors who made these elimination rounds received bids to the 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University.  Since George Mason is a third tier tournament in the National Points Race, Taft will earn 100 points for her victory and all competitors who made elimination rounds will earn points for themselves and their respective schools.

On another note, GMU is the last major tournament held before bids to the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin are sent out.  When we get word about the complete field for this year’s 2012 Round Robin, we will post it here on Extemp Central.

2011 Glenbrooks: McDonald Wins a Wild Glenbrooks; Des Moines Roosevelt Puts Two in Finals

The 2011 Glenbrooks might go down as one of the wildest in recent memory.  After the final round concluded, Bill McDonald of Brophy College Preparatory in Arizona, Nathan Leys of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa, and John Cherian of Bellarmine College Prep in California ended up in a three way, unbreakable tie, with a cumulative score of seven.  The tournament broke the tie by counting all of the extempers ranks in elimination rounds.  This left McDonald and Leys in a tie with twenty-two ranks and the tournament then broke that tie by judges preference, where McDonald prevailed two judges to one.  McDonald’s victory will net him 100 points in this year’s National Points Race.  Aside from the top three competitors, the final round was littered with several notable national names.  Matt DeBari of Lake Highland Preparatory in Florida made another final round appearance as did Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt.  Sophomore Abhishek Bhargava of Jackson High School in Ohio, who made the semi-finals of International Extemp at last year’s NFL National Tournament, also made the final round.

The National Points Race will be updated by the end of the week to reflect the results of the Glenbrooks.  All of the extempers who made the elimination rounds earned a bid to this year’s 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions at Northwestern University.

Here are the results of the tournament (you can access the tab sheet by clicking here):

2011 Florida Blue Key: Des Moines Roosevelt Sweeps Both Extemp Categories; Calder Wins the Round Robin

Last weekend, the Florida Blue Key held its annual speech and debate tournament.  Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa swept both extemp categories, as Lily Nellans won United States Extemp and Nathan Leys won International Extemp.  Nellans and Leys were also the only two extempers in the tournament that finaled in both extemp categories.  In the Round Robin, Joe Calder, who came into the tournament as the second highest ranked extemper in the National Points Race, from Cary Academy in North Carolina came out on top.  The tournament was a fifth tier tournament in the National Points Race, so like St. Mark’s calculations will need to be made based on where all finalists placed.

We still need the tab sheets from the Blue Key tournament so that we can evaluate the quarter-finalists, semi-finalists, and finalists and render a judgment for which six extempers will earn National Points Race points.  If you have this tab sheet, please e-mail it to me at [email protected].

2011 St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational: Stone and Leys Exchange Finishes; Leys Becomes First Non-Texas Extemper to Win an Extemp Category Since 2007

Last week, the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational took place in Dallas, Texas.  The tournament allows extempers to participate in United States and International Extemp and Zachary Stone of Plano West High School in Texas and Nathan Leys of Des Moines Roosevelt Senior High School in Iowa exchanged finishes in those categories.  Stone won International Extemp, while lays won U.S. Extemp.  Leys is the first non-Texan to win an extemp category at St. Mark’s since 2007, when Mark Kozlowski of New Trier High School in Illinois won U.S. extemp.

Calculations will be made to determine which six extempers will receive National Points Race points, but since both extemp categories had more than forty extempers, all of the extempers who reached the semi-finals and beyond in each category earned bids to the 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC)

2011 Yale Invitational: Millburn Returns to the Winner’s Circle as Harrison Takes the Title

At the 2011 Yale Invitational Tournament, which was a fourth tier tournament in this year’s National Points Race and took place several weeks ago, Chase Harrison of Millburn High School in New Jersey came out on top.  Harrison defeated teammate Henry Chapman for the title.  Harrison becomes the foruth extemper from Millburn to win the Yale tournament since 2004.  The final round featured a litany of competitors who made their names known in last year’s National Points Race.  Alessandro Pauri from Flower Mound High School in Texas, who was the overall winner of the St. Mark’s tournament last year according to Extemp Central’s rankings, placed third and Joe Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina, who was a runner-up at the Wake Forest National Early Bird, placed fifth.  All of the extempers who broke at Yale earned a bid to the 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions.  All of those who made the semi-final round and beyond earned National Points Race points.

2011 Wake Forest National Early Bird: Singh Beats Calder; Defending Champion Taft Places Third

Results are in from the 2011 Wake Forest National Early Bird Tournament, which is the first tournament in the 2011-2012 Extemp Central National Points Race.  The final round featured six extempers from four different states.  Jason Singh of Green Valley High School in Nevada was the winner, earning his first national circuit victory.  Singh will be the first leader of this year’s National Points Race, who’s breakdown and standings will be updated near the end of this week.  Joseph Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina placed second.  Defending champion Isabelle Taft of Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia placed third.  All elimination round participants earned a qualification leg for the 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions.

Here are the final round results, provided to us by Ben Constine:

2011 NFL National Tournament: Semi-Finalist Placings Are Announced

At the conclusion of the United States and International Extemporaneous Speaking final rounds, the National Forensic League recognized the semi-finalists in both categories. Semi-finalists earn National Points Race points relative to how they placed, unlike other National Points Race tournament, which do not recognize the placings of students who do not reach the final round.

Here are the announced placings:

2011 Extemp TOC: Constine Upsets Slinger; National Points Race Remains Undecided

After two days of competition, the 2011 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) has come to a close and Ben Constine of Yorktown High School in Virginia is your winner.  Constine, who finished second at the George Mason Extemp Round Robin, fourth at the Wake Forest National Early Bird, and was a quarter-finalist at the George Mason University Patriot Games Tournament and at Harvard, scored what many could call an upset in the final round when he defeated last year’s CFL extemp national champion, Dylan Slinger of Lakeville High School in Minnesota, by judges preferences to win the title.  Constine is the first Virginia extemper to win a National Points Race tournament since Ariel Schneller won Yale in 2001.  Slinger was the only competitor in the top 15 in the National Points Race to make the final round.  Texas, which had more qualifiers to this year’s TOC than any other state, had two finalists.  Matthew Hinojosa of Flower Mound High School placed third and Susan Czaikowski, who was an NFL semi-finalist in United States Extemp last year and was invited to this year’s Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin, placed fifth.  Matt Rauen of Pennsbury High School in Pennsylvania placed fourth and Emily Bell of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Missouri made her second National Points Race final of the year and placed sixth.

2011 Harvard National High School Invitational Forensic Tournament: Donahue Wins Second National Points Race Tournament of the Year

Nathaniel Donahue’s streak of top three finishes in the National Points Race continued at Harvard last weekend, as the North Carolina extemper won his second National Points Race tournament of the year.  The victory gives Donahue one hundred points in the National Points Race and provides further distance between he and the rest of the field.  Curan Mehra of Scarsdale High School in New York, who won Yale earlier this season and finished sixth at the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin in January, placed second.  Shikha Garg of Plano Senior High School in Texas placed third in her third final round appearance at a National Points Race tournament this year.  The other extemper in the final round that was making a multiple final round finish in a National Points Race tournament was Peter Vogel of Ridge High School.  Vogel took third at Yale earlier this year and took fifth last weekend.

All of the elimination round participants earned TOC bids and all of the extempers who made the quarter-final round and beyond earned National Points Race points.  The National Points Race will be updated tomorrow to reflect the results of Harvard and the California Invitational.

2011 California Invitational: Tembhekar Defends Championship; Leland Takes Top Three

At last weekend’s California Invitational at Berkeley, a fifth tier tournament in the National Points Race, Amode Tembhekar successfully defended his championship and earned forty points in this year’s National Points Race.  Tembhekar’s school, Leland High School, took the top three places at the tournament, an impressive feat that will make the team a contender in this year’s National Team Points Race standings.  The only finalist who had earned points at a National Points Race Tournament so far this year was Louis Li, last year’s California state champion in International Extemporaneous Speaking.  Li finished sixth this year at Glenbrooks and finished fourth last weekend.  Thank you to Robert Sheard and Chris Wardner for providing us with results.

Since the California Invitational is an Extemp TOC qualifier, all of the elimination round participants earned Extemp TOC bids.  The top six finishers earned National Points Race points and the National Points Race will be updated tomorrow to reflect the results of Harvard and Berkeley.
