2010-2011 National Points Race Standings Updated!

The 2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race and National Team Points Race standings have been updated to reflect the results of last week’s Glenbrooks Tournament.  Find out who made a move in the individual and team points races by clicking on the National Points Race tab above or clicking here.

The next National Points Race tournament can’t come soon enough as next week’s George Mason University Patriot Games Tournament is a third tier tournament that will offer 100 points to the winner and points to quarter-final and semi-final finishers.  George Mason is the last National Points Race tournament of first semester and it will set the National Points Race standings before the Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin in early January.  It is also the last chance for extempers who are on the MBA bubble to solidify their chances of making the field.

2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: St. Mark’s Calculations

Since the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational allows extempers to do International and United States Extemp, Extemp Central combines extemper’s finishes in each category to prevent counting both as separate tournaments and giving extempers who attended St. Mark’s an advantage over other competitors in the National Points Race.  Prior to St. Mark’s, Extemp Central announced how it would determine which extempers would receive National Points Race points.  At St. Mark’s, extempers received points based on their finishes in International and United States Extemp.  The six extempers with the lowest point totals were awarded National Points Race points.

Here is a quick rehash of that system:

Extemp Central National Points Race: How Points Will Be Awarded for St. Mark’s

Starting tomorrow, the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational will take place in Dallas, Texas.  The tournament is unique in that it allows extempers to do both United States and International Extemp.  The St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational is a fifth tier tournament and is the third tournament of the year in the Extemp Central National Points Race.

To award points at this event, Extemp Central will combine extempers performance in U.S. and International Extemp categories.  For each part of the tournament extempers will receive points based on their finish.  The points awarded go as follows:

2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: This Year’s Point Structure

by Logan Scisco

Last month, Extemp Central revealed the tournaments that will make up this year’s Extemp Central National Points Race.  Unlike last year, no tournaments were dropped from the National Points Race, although George Mason University Patriot Games and the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions switched tiers.  The decision to keep the California Invitational in the fifth tier aroused criticism, but the placement decisions are final for the 2010-2011 season.  Any changes in the California Invitational’s position, as well as that of any other tournament, will take place after the National Forensic League (NFL) National Speech and Debate Tournament in June.

2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: First & Second Tier Tournaments

This year’s first and second tier each have one tournament.  These are the most prestigious tournaments of the year and are the tournaments that extempers aspire to win the most.

Extempers who finish in the octo-final and quarter-final rounds in the first tier tournament will be awarded points in the National Points Race.

2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: Third Tier Tournaments

Just like last year, the third tier of the Extemp Central National Points Race has more tournaments than any other tier.  With the Extemp TOC falling into the fourth tier, find out which tournament moved up.

Also, this year there will be a change in how third tier tournaments are tabulated.  Instead of points only being given to finalists, students who reach quarter-final and semi-final rounds at these tournaments will also receive points.  A breakdown of how points are awarded will be revealed next week.

2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: Fourth Tier Tournaments

The following tournaments have been selected as fourth tier tournaments for the 2010-2011 National Points Race.  The criteria in selecting these three tournaments for this tier is that they had more participation or higher quality fields than tournaments in the fifth tier, but lacked the prestige and/or the extremely wide participation of tournaments in the third tier.

This year, Extemp Central will award points for the finalists AND semi-finalists of these tournaments.  A complete listing of the points that will be awarded will be announced next week.

2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: Fifth Tier Tournaments

This year the Extemp Central National Points Race will keep the five tiered system that was introduced last year.  Tournaments in this year’s fifth tier will award points for all finalists, or those that finish in the top six if there are more than six finalists.

Below are the tournaments that will compose this year’s fifth tier of the National Points Race.

Extemp Central National Points Race 2010-2011: Top 10 Extempers to Watch

Before each new extemp season, a set of pre-season rankings serve as a valuable starting point.  Competitors like to know how they match up against each other and are interested to see who is returning to the circuit.  Extemp Central looked over last year’s results and put together a pre-season top ten based simply on last year’s National Points Race standings. The logic goes that the standings showed finishes that were accumulated by competitors during last season at major tournaments and since points in the National Points Race are only given out for final placings (with the exception of nationals), all of the competitors below had some major showings last year.

The Extemp Central National Points Race is a competition designed to reward extempers for placing high at selected national circuit competitions throughout the year. Tournaments are placed into five tiers based on their level of prestige and each tier awards a different amount of points towards the top six finishers (CFL and NFL Nationals award points for semi-finalists). To find out what point value tournaments are worth, check out the first issue of The Ex Files on the tab above. At the end of the season, the winner of the National Points Race will receive a customary glass trophy recognizing their achievement courtesy of Extemp Central.

Extemp Central also sponsors a National Team Points Race competition. When extempers compete and place highly at selected tournaments they earn points for themselves and their school. In the case of a tie, the number of finalists schools have had throughout the year is used as a tiebreaker.

National Points Race: Scenarios to Consider for Tomorrow’s Final Rounds

After three days of competition, the final rounds for International and United States extemporaneous speaking are set for NFL Nationals.  Of those in the National Points Race, James Mohan of Danville High School (Kentucky), Jacob Baker of Bellarmine College Prep (California), and Steven Elliott of Lakeville North High School (Minnesota) are in the International Extemp final.  In United States extemp, CFL national champion Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School (Minnesota) and Oscar Wang of San Marino High School (California) are still alive.  National Points Race leader Dillon Huff dropped in the quarter-final round of International extemp and that has given all of the extempers listed above an opportunity to walk away with the National Points Race trophy tomorrow evening.  Nabeel Zewail and Aaron Lutkowitz, where were ranked behind Huff in the National Points Race, were eliminated from the IX octofinal and quarter-final rounds, respectively.

Based on  the fact that the finalists listed above need to accumulate 320 points to pass Dillon Huff and take the National Points Race title, Extemp Central has broken down what placings the extempers in those rounds will need to do that.  The number listed beside the placing is what their point total will look like if they achieve that position.  The number in parenthesis is the amount of points they will earn if they earn that placing and win the final round.
