2014 National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament: Coscia Wins New Jersey’s First CFL Extemp Title of the Century, Thwarts Nellans Grand Slam Bid

[fblike]

ChicagoExtemporaneous speaking was the largest event at this year’s National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament, with 246 extempers arriving in Chicago, Illinois to lay claim to the season’s first national championship. The late elimination rounds featured two national finalists, four state champions, and five Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin participants, but it was Monica Coscia, a semi-finalist at this year’s Yale and Princeton tournaments, as well as a runner-up at this year’s New Jersey state tournament in United States Extemp, that took the title. Coscia thwarted Lily Nellans bid for a 2014 grand slam and a successful defense of her 2012 CFL national title (Nellans did not compete in last year’s tournament). Nellans, who competes for Des Moines Roosevelt High School (IA), tied Coscia at the end of eight rounds of competition, but lost the final round by one rank, which was the tournament tiebreaker. Coscia’s victory is the first CFL national championship for a New Jersey extemper since at least 1997 and her victory means that women have won two of the last three CFL national championships.

Josh Wartel of Lake Braddock Secondary School (VA) was the tournament’s highest placing underclassmen, coming in third and finishing only one rank behind Coscia and Nellans.

William Walker of Fullerton Joint Union High School (CA), a Glenbrooks finalist and 2014 MBA participant, was the only extemper to win two first place ranks in the final round, but two sixth place ranks weighed down his cumulative total and he finished fourth.

The topic area of the final round was U.S. economic policy.

All of the underclassmen who qualified for elimination rounds earned an automatic qualification to the 2015 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Seventeen extempers, not counting those underclassmen who had previously qualified through 2014 TOC outrounds and 2014 state finals, earned a qualification to the TOC through this route and are indicated in italics below.

2013 NFL Nationals: Leys & Rende Win National Championships; Rambachan Makes Final Round History

The 2013 extemporaneous speaking season has ended with the crowning of two new national champions at NFL Nationals. In International Extemp, Nathan Leys of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (Iowa) stopped Ashesh Rambachan of Eastview High School (Minnesota) from repeating as national champion and became the first Iowan extemper in the modern era (defined as the beginning of the USX/IX split) to win extemporaneous speaking at NFL Nationals.  However, Rambachan did win the national final round, thereby becoming the first extemper in NFL history to repeat as final round national champion in the same extemporaneous speaking category.  This is also the third consecutive year that an extemper from Minnesota has won the national final round championship in International Extemp.  The two underclassmen in the final, Lyubov Kapko of Tempe Preparatory School (Arizona) and Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School (Iowa), placed third and fifth, respectively.

In an underclassmen dominated United States Extemp final, Arel Rende of Tulsa Washington High School (Oklahoma), a two-time state champion, won an undisputed championship by winning the overall title and the national final round title. Like Leys in International Extemp, Rende becomes the first Oklahoma extemper in the modern era to capture a national championship at NFL.  Since all of the finalists in the U.S. Extemp final were underclassmen, it is possible that next year’s final in Kansas could be a complete rematch of this round.

Extemp Central congratulates all of the finalists and this year’s national champions and their coaches.

2013 NFL Nationals: USX & IX Semi-Final Placings

As is customary as NFL Nationals, the semi-finalists in each individual and debate event are recognized after their respective final rounds. Here were the rankings of the semi-finalists in United States and International Extemporaneous speaking at this year’s national tournament. Any underclassmen that are on the last below, as well as those in today’s finals, have automatically qualified to next year’s national tournament.  Extemp Central congratulates all of these extempers on their semi-final placings, which puts them in the top 6% of their category at this year’s national tournament.

Awards are scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. EST.

2013 NCFL National Tournament: Ferrante Wins CFL National Championship, Ethe Takes Second

Here are the final results from the 2013 Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament that was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania over the weekend.  Half of this year’s final round was composed of finalists from the previous year.  Winner Gabe Ferrante of Iona Preparatory School in New York took sixth in last year’s final.   Allison McKibban of El Dorado High School in Kansas took third, the same place that she took in last year’s tournament, and Robert McDonough of Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Pennsylvania improved his performance by one placing and finished fourth.  Jake Ethe of Half Hollow Hills High School took second, giving New York the top two extempers in this year’s tournament.  Ferrante becomes the first New York winner of the CFL extemp championship since at least 1997.

Defending national champion Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa was not in attendance to defend her title.

Here is the complete listing of elimination round results.  All elimination round participants have qualified to next year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions at Northwestern University (Rankings for the tournament can be viewed at this link):

Champion: Gabe Ferrante (Iona Preparatory School, New York)
2nd: Jake Ethe (Half Hollow Hills High School, New York)
3rd: Allison McKibban (El Dorado High School, Kansas)

5th: Omkar Mahajan (James Logan High School, California)
6th: Dylan Adelman (Lakeville South High School, Minnesota)

2012 NFL Nationals: Rambachan Avenges CFL Defeat and Captures International Extemp Championship; McDonald Caps a Great National Circuit Year with a Victory in United States Extemp; Vijay wins USX Final Round Title

The 2012 NFL National Tournament and with it the 2011-2012 competitive season has come to a close. Ashesh Rambachan of Eastview High School finished what he began last year by winning the International Extemp championship and becoming the third member of his family to do so. His sister Ishanaa won the championship in 2004 and his brother Akshar won the championship in 2007. Ashesh also joins his three siblings in winning the final round national championship. Rambachan’s victory in International Extemp foiled Lily Nellans chance to complete a Grand Slam, but she will have a chance to complete a career Grand Slam next year. Rambachan will also have the opportunity to repeat as champion, which has never been done before in International Extemp.

William McDonald of Brophy College Preparatory in Arizona also capped a fantastic year by winning the United States Extemp national championship. McDonald won Glenbrooks and Harvard this year, so he has the unique honor of winning two of the biggest high school invitationals of the year on the national circuit and a national title. However, Madhu Vijay of Bellarmine College Preparatory in California won the final round national title and will have a chance to obtain the top prize at next year’s NFL National Tournament.  McDonald’s victory is the first by an Arizona extemper at NFL Nationals.

NFL has not yet posted the cume sheet for IE and debate events. When they do, we’ll link to it.

2012 CFL Nationals: Nellans Wins the Third Leg of the Extemp Grand Slam; Rambachan Takes Second

Over Memorial Day weekend, over 200 extempers gathered in Baltimore, Maryland for the 2012 National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament. In the final round, National Points Race leader Lily Nellans of Des Moines Roosevelt High School continued her winning streak at major tournaments on the national level and notched her third consecutive Grand Slam victory. It is also Nellans third major extemp championship, all of which she has won this year and it is her fifth victory in a National Points Race tournament this season. Nellans entered the final round trailing the runner-up, Ashesh Rambachan of Eastview High School in Minnesota, who was the runner-up to Dylan Slinger at last year’s NFL National Tournament in International Extemp, but rallied by taking four of the five available first place ranks. Nellans becomes the first sophomore to win the CFL Grand National championship and the first sophomore to win a national championship since Kevin Troy accomplished that feat ten years ago in Atlanta, Georgia at the 2003 NFL National Tournament in United States Extemp.  Nellans becomes the first female extemper to win CFL Nationals since 2004, when Courtney Otto of Kentucky Country Day School in Kentucky won the tournament.  Isabelle Taft of Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia, who was this year’s George Mason winner and who finished behind Nellans at the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin, placed third.  Allison McKibban of El Dorado High School in Kansas also deserves an honorable mention for making the final round, as she also made the finals of the Extemp TOC two weeks ago.

All of the extempers that made elimination rounds at this year’s CFL have automatically qualified for the 2013 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions at Northwestern University. All of the extempers that made the quarter-final round and beyond will earn National Points Race points.

2011 NFL National Tournament: Slinger Pulls Off the Double Crown, Odessky Breaks Florida’s Extemp Drought

The 2010-2011 extemporaneous speaking season has come to a conclusion and at tonight’s 2011 NFL National Tournament awards ceremony, Jared Odessky of Nova High School was crowned as this year’s NFL national champion in United States Extemp and Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School in Minnesota became this year’s NFL national champion in International Extemp.  Slinger’s victory gives him a “double crown” of CFL and NFL national championships, making him the third extemper to accomplish the feat.  It is also Slinger’s third major championship.  Odessky becomes the first extemper from Nova High School to win an extemporaneous speaking national championship at NFL and is the first extemper from Florida to win a national championship since Jay Ward won U.S. Extemp in 2002.  Slinger and Odessky each won their respective final rounds and Slinger becomes the first extemper in NFL history to win the final rounds of U.S. and International Extemp in a career. Ashesh Rambachan of Eastview High School in Minnesota was the highest placing underclassmen in either category, finishing one spot behind Slinger in International Extemp.

2011 Catholic Forensic League National Tournament: Slinger Successfully Defends Title; Donahue Takes Second, but Clinches the National Points Race

Awards ended a short time ago for the 2011 Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament and Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School in Minnesota successfully defended the national title that he won last year in Omaha, Nebraska.  To win his second CFL national championship, Slinger beat back National Points Race leader Nathaniel Donahue of Durham Academy of North Carolina in a rehash of the Glenbrooks tournament from earlier in the season.  Slinger also avenged a defeat two weeks ago at the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions by defeated Ben Constine of Yorktown High School in Virginia.  This is the first time in ten years that an extemper has repeated as the CFL national champion in extemporaneous speaking.  The last extemper to do so was Jason Lear in 2000 and 2001.  Sophomore extemper Isabelle Taft from Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia continued her impressive season, which has included victories at Wake Forest and the Barkley Forum, by placing fourth and Ben Mabie of James Logan High School in California, who was the top seed going into elimination rounds, placed fifth.  Brandon Pakkebier of Sheboygan High School in Wisconsin, who was a quarter-finalist at this year’s TOC, placed sixth.

Aside from Slinger’s victory, the other notable event is that Donahue’s second place finish, which is his eighth top three finish of the year, has clinched the National Points Race.  While this will make NFL a formality, it should be noted that the second and third place finishers also receive awards from Extemp Central, so extempers who are within striking distance of those spots still have something to shoot for at NFL.  The National Points Race will be updated near the end of next week so extempers can see where they stand heading into the NFL National Tournament.

Here are the results of the 2011 Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament.  All of these elimination round participants have earned an automatic qualification to the 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University.  All of the extempers who made it to the quarter-final round and beyond will earn National Points Race points:

2010 IDEA/NJFL Middle School Nationals: Ross Repeats as National Champion

Last week the National Junior Forensic League and International Debate Education Association National Middle School Forensics Tournament was held in Des Moines, Iowa and Gregory Ross of Sidney Lanier Middle School in Texas outlasted thirty-one other competitors to win his second consecutive NJFL extemporaneous speaking national championship.  Ross had the same cumulative score as Lilly Nellans of Callanan Middle School in Iowa but won because of judges preference.  Sidney Lanier had half of the participants in the final round.

Final results are listed below. A more complete listing can be found here.

NFL Nationals 2010: Baker and Fabbri Return With a Vengeance; Slinger Takes a Second National Trophy

Last night, the 2010 National Forensic League (NFL) national tournament concluded in Kansas City, Missouri.  Earlier in the day, the top six competitors in International and United States extemp battled it out and when the smoke cleared, Jacob Baker of Bellarmine College Prep (California) and Tyler Fabbri of Chesterton High School (Indiana) emerged victorious.  This was the second consecutive final round appearance for both extempers.  Baker’s victory is the second consecutive year that Bellarmine College Prep has left NFL Nationals with an extemporaneous speaking national championship.  Fabbri’s victory is the first by an Indiana extemper in United States extemp and he becomes the second extemper from Chesterton to win an extemp national championship at NFL since the USX/IX division was created in 1985.  Although Catholic Forensic League national champion Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School (Minnesota) was not able to obtain a sweep at NFL, he managed to finish second behind Fabbri and won the final round national championship.  Baker edged James Mohan of Danville High School (Kentucky) by judges preference in the International final round.

Final results are listed below.  A more complete listing can be found here.

2010 CFL Nationals: Final Extemp Results

Thanks to Andy Charrier of Lakeville South High School we’ve acquired the results for the top six at the 2010 Catholic Forensic League (CFL) Grand National tournament that was held in Omaha, Nebraska last week.  As we initially reported, Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School in Minnesota captured the title over James Mohan of Danville High School in Kentucky.  This was the third time in six years that a Minnesota extemper has won the CFL national championship.  Since Slinger is a junior, he will have an opportunity next year to become the first extemper to repeat as CFL national champion since Jason Lear did it in 2000 and 2001. He will also have the opportunity to become the third extemper to win both CFL and NFL National championships in the same year, which Kevin Troy and Akshar Rambachan, the last two Minnesota extempers to win CFL, accomplished in 2005 and 2007.

Here were the final results:

CFL National Champion:  Dylan Slinger (Lakeville South High School, Minnesota)
2nd: James Mohan (Danville High School, Kentucky)
3rd: Michael Barton (Regis High School, New York)
4th: Mirza Germovic (Des Moines Roosevelt High School, Iowa)
5th: Bo Lint (Suncoast Community High School, Florida)
6th: Meera Sury (Roseville Area High School, Minnesota)

After CFL posts its complete results packed, Extemp Central will be able to enter the 25 pts. for the six semi-finalists at the tournament (the two that we know of are Forrest Richardson of Savannah High School in Missouri and Emily Martin of Boone County High School in Kentucky) and update the National Points Race accordingly. Congratulations to the finalists and Extemp Central wishes them the best of luck in Kansas City.

CFL Nationals Update: Dylan Slinger Captures National Championship; Mohan Finishes Second

Full results from the 2010 Catholic Forensic League Grand National tournament have not fully come in, but from what we have gathered Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School in Minnesota, the reigning Minnesota state champion and Extemp TOC finalist last year, has emerged victorious.  Jamie Mohan of Danville High School in Kentucky, the champion of this year’s Barkley Forum tournament and the eighth ranked extemper in the National Points Race has finished second.  Reports also indicate that Mirza Germovic of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa, who was a finalist earlier in the month at the Extemp TOC and is ranked twelfth in the National Points Race, was in the final round but his finish is unknown.
