This R&D provides information on UnitedHealth’s recent decision to leave thirty-four of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) health insurance exchanges due to mounting losses.  The insurer says that it will lose $650 million this year, partly due to the fact that those using the exchanges are most in need of care versus those that receive insurance from an employer.  This sicker risk pool was not offset by enough younger, healthier customers so UnitedHealth has taken a financial hit.  Critics of the ACA say that UnitedHealth’s departure from the exchanges will lead to fewer options for exchange customers and that it is further proof that the ACA is not working for a majority of Americans. Defenders of the law say that UnitedHealth’s exit will not adversely affect the ability of Americans to purchase health insurance over the short-term or long-term.

This R&D provides resources on corruption in Iraq.  Since the 2003 U.S. invasion, successive Iraqi governments have struggled to battle the problem, which has reduced the confidence of the Iraqi people in the post-Saddam regime.  On Saturday, hundreds of angry Iraqis overwhelmed the Green Zone in Baghdad, a fortified headquarters for the Iraqi government, and demanded the creation of a technocratic government to solve the nation’s problems.  Transparency International, a civil society organization that documents incidences of global corruption, ranks Iraq 161 out of 168 in its corruption index.

This R&D provides resources on Austria’s turn to the right.  Last week, the Austrian Freedom Party, a far-right party that campaigns on a platform of immigration restriction and euroskepticism won the first round of the Austrian presidential election.  The party won the most votes in its sixty-year history for the ceremonial post.  However, if its candidate, Norbert Hofer wins the runoff it would pave the way for new parliamentary elections that could also benefit it.  Anti-EU parties across Europe championed Hofer’s win, but critics warned that it showed Europe was becoming increasingly intolerant of migrants and other cultures.

Today’s R&D from Prepd provides resources on Social Security.  The program was part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal in 1935, but is now encountering problems related to a lack of workers for current retirees and questions about whether benefit cuts will have to take place in order to keep the program afloat.  The popularity of the program has traditionally thwarted radical attempts to change it, as former President George W. Bush experienced first-hand in 2005.  Nevertheless, members of both parties agree that some type of adjustment will have to take place within the program within the next twenty years to make it sustainable.

This R&D provides information about the sale of Yahoo!  The Internet search engine reportedly has $7.1 billion in cash and has a core business that is estimated to be worth more than $4 billion, but it has failed to displace Google and its ventures into multimedia have largely failed.  Companies such as Google, Verizon, Microsoft, and the Daily Mail have been reported as possible buyers, but private equity firms may try to buy the company and then sell off its various assets.

This R&D provides resources on U.S.-Saudi relations.  President Barack Obama is heading to Saudi Arabia today, but does so in an atmosphere of discord after Saudi Arabia threatened to dump $750 billion in U.S. assets if Congress passes a bill that would enable American citizens to sue the kingdom over the September 11 terror attacks.  The dispute shines light on the discord in the relationship between the two countries, with the Saudis already skeptical about President Obama’s outreach to Iran during his presidency.

This R&D provides resources on Ukrainian politics.  The country has experienced significant political unrest since the Euromaidan protests in November 2013 that led to the toppling of President Victor Yanukovych.  This week saw embattled Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announce his resignation.  Yatsenyuk was favored by Western interests, but was dogged by corruption allegations and he also lost significant popular support.  His resignation may allow President Petro Poroshenko to consolidate support by installing an ally to the post. Ukraine desperately needs strong leadership to fix its economic woes and ward off Russian advances.
