This R&D provides resources on a planned U.S. manned mission to Mars.  The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is planning a mission that would see future astronauts land on an asteroid in 2025 and go to Mars in 2030.  Doing so will require significant technological advances and a long-term vision by American politicians to fund such a mission, but the popularity of Matt Damon’s recent film The Martian may help to give momentum to the idea of putting an American on Mars by the end of NASA’s time frame.

This R&D provides resources on Portugal’s recent parliamentary elections.  The nation’s centre-right coalition managed to win the most votes, although its lost its parliamentary majority, defying opinion polls that projected a victory for the centre-left Socialist Party and far-left Left Bloc earlier in the year.  Like other European nations, Portugal has dealt with significant economic problems since the 2008 global financial crisis.  Its unemployment rate is still in double digits and its gross domestic product (GDP) is 7.8% lower than 2007, but economic conditions are steadily improving, which seemingly bolstered the centre-right’s chances of retaining office.  The victory gives hope to Portugal’s Iberian neighbor Spain, which will hold its parliamentary elections in December and where centre-right forces also hope to retain power in the face of far-left, anti-austerity opposition.

This R&D provides resources on Spain’s Catalan independence movement.  The region, which enjoys some political and cultural autonomy, has created some headaches for Spanish authorities in recent years.  Last year, Artur Mas, who heads the Catalan regional government, called a referendum on Catalan independence, a referendum that Spanish authorities refused to recognize.  After Mas promised that independence would come if pro-independence parties won a majority in regional elections, Spain moved to indict him for abuse of power.  The Catalan independence movement is one of many independence movements forming in Europe, with the other notable one being Scotland’s drive for independence from Great Britain.

This R&D provides resources on Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s decision to end his bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.  Walker’s poll numbers were falling rapidly over the last month and reports circulated that his campaign had run out of funds.  Once leading polls in Iowa and deemed as one of the party’s stronger candidates, Walker struggled on foreign policy questions and was seemingly overshadowed by rogue candidate Donald Trump.  Walker is the second Republican candidate to drop out of the race.

This R&D provides resources on Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.  Nieto was elected in 2012 and is affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).  Nieto has championed reforms that call for liberalizing the Mexican economy and he has done his best to face down the nation’s teachers’ unions.  However, these battles, along with continuing drug violence, have caused him to have very low approval ratings halfway through his presidency.

This R&D provides resources on Russian foreign policy in Syria.  Syria has long been a client state of Vladimir Putin’s regime and Russia has a naval base at Tartus, which is its only naval facility on the Mediterranean.  Putin argues that Western intervention has made the Syrian Civil War worse, making parallels to how Western intervention in Libya destabilized that nation’s political and social order.  In recent weeks, Russia has increased support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, sending more tanks, artillery, and military personnel.  The Pentagon also postulates that Russia could be building a forward air base near the port of Latakia.

This R&D provides resources on former Texas Governor Rick Perry’s decision to withdraw from the 2016 Republican presidential primary.  Perry announced his decision on Friday and he is the first Republican presidential candidate to drop out of the race.  Although he was once considered a frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2012, Perry never made significant traction in 2016 campaign.  Pundits believe that his inability to acquire high poll ratings illustrates the smothering effect that Donald Trump’s candidacy is having on the ability of other Republican contenders to be heard.
