This R&D provides resources on the closing stretch of the 2016 presidential election.  Last week it appeared that Donald Trump was heading to certain defeat, but the announcement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was looking into new e-mails related to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has given him a late jolt in the polls.  Trump has re-established his lead in the Los Angeles Times tracking poll and has closed a twelve point margin in the ABC/Washington Post tracking poll.  However, for Trump to win he would still need to sweep nearly all the remaining tossup states and then capture a state in Clinton’s column according RealClearPolitics and that may be tough to do with just a week left.

This R&D provides resources on the problems of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  President Barack Obama’s major legislative initiative is suffering from a lack of insurance competition in many states and it was revealed this week that significant premium hikes are on the way.  Some states such as Arizona could see premium hikes that go beyond 100%.  Republican critics of the ACA have seized on this as proof that the system should be scrapped, while liberal forces argue that a “public option” should be introduced where the government could compete with private insurers to keep premium costs low.  It is unclear whether recent news about the ACA will affect the 2016 presidential election and be this year’s “October Surprise.”

This R&D provides resources on the ongoing civil war in Yemen.  The war began last year when Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, occupied the nation’s capital of Sana’a and overthrew the elected government.  The conflict has become a proxy war between the Houthis and elements that have rallied around the old Yemeni government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, a Sunni nation.  Yemen is 56% Sunni, so there is significant hostility to allowing a Shi’ite faction such as the Houthis to take power.

This R&D provides resources on growing turmoil within the Republican Party.  After revelations of lewd talk by presidential candidate Donald Trump last week several Republican officials have ceased to endorse him and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan cancelled future appearances with his party’s presidential nominee.  Trump responded by saying that he is now running against Democrats and Republicans who are cozy with “the establishment.”  Pundits wonder if the split between Trump supporters and those that loathe him within the GOP could cause the party to suffer significant losses in the Senate and whether the party’s hold on the House will also be jeopardized.

This R&D provides resources on the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) planned production cuts.  After spending more than a year trying to keep prices low in an effort to hurt Western oil production, the oil cartel appears to be jettisoning that agenda and is moving to reduce production by 700,000 barrels a day.  The planned move caused U.S. crude oil prices to increase by 8%, although some analysts think that OPEC needs a larger production cut in order to generate more revenue for member states.  OPEC members such as Saudi Arabia and Venezuela have been devastated by low oil prices, which have strained government budgets.

This R&D provides resources on the ongoing situation in Darfur.  The western region of Sudan has been beset with violence and human rights violations for over a decade, with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir already indicted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC).  Reports surfaced this week from Amnesty International that the Sudanese government might be using chemical weapons in the region, which has brought renewed attention to the ongoing conflict.

This R&D provides resources on the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JAFTA).  The bill recently became law after Congress mustered a two-thirds majority of both houses to override President Barack Obama’s veto and enables civil claims to be filed against foreign states for acts of international terrorism.  Previously, U.S. citizens could only sue nations that the U.S. State Department labeled as state sponsors of terrorism, but the new legislation amends this previous provision of U.S. law.  Families of victims of the September 11 terror attacks plan to use the legislation to sue Saudi Arabia, which has said that it will reconsider political and economic ties with the U.S.

This R&D provides resources on the fallout from the first presidential debate.  Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump clashed on Monday evening.  Observers argued that Clinton won the debate by being on the offensive more against Trump, although some argued that the debate was really a draw.  Polls are still being assembled to illustrate if either candidate will pull away after the debate, but there are some indications that Clinton may have stopped some of her slide in the polls in the lead up to Monday night.
