Two weeks ago, extempers from South Dakota competed in the South Dakota Activities Association State Tournament. South Dakota has two classes for its state tournament, which are then divided into International and United States Extemp categories.

In Class A International Extemp, Brady S. Jandl of Lennox High School became the first winner from Lennox since 2010. Jandl defeated Kadon Leddy of Milbank High School for the title. Jandl’s Lennox teammate August W. Meyer finished in third place.

In Class A United States Extemp, Berk Ehrmantraut of Beresford High School became the first state champion from his school in the category since 1992. Joe Miller of Vermillion High School finished runner-up for the second consecutive year and was trying to become the second consecutive Vermillion extemper to win the U.S. Extemp state title. Connor Lightfield of Milbank High School took third place, an improvement over his seventh place finish last season.

Class AA International Extemp saw Shyanne Redlin of Watertown High School successfully defend her state championship. Redlin defeated Ryan Wellman of SF Lincoln High School. She becomes the first back-to-back winner in AA International Extemp since Ann Fishback of Brookings High School accomplished the feat in 1996. Yilun Li of Brookings High School finished third.

And in Class AA United States Extemp Ryan Solberg gave Mitchell High School its fourth consecutive winner in the category, defeating Caleb Munce of SF Lincoln. Solberg was a return finalist, having placed fifth at last year’s state tournament. Emily Meier of Aberdeen Central High School rounded out the top three.

All of the finalists at the tournament earned an automatic qualification to the 2015 Extemp TOC at Northwestern University.

2015 Texas Forensic Association State Tournament: Sridharan Repeats in IX; Webb Gives Saint Mary’s Hall First Extemp Championship

Texas usually hosts one of the largest state tournaments in the country and this year’s Texas Forensic Association (TFA) State Tournament lived up to that billing by attracting more than one hundred competitors in International Extemp and ninety-nine competitors in United States Extemp.

In International Extemp, Abhinav Sridharan of Plano Senior High School successfully defended his state championship, achieving a dominating eight rank victory over second place finisher Matthew Feng of Plano West High School. Sridharan took four of the five available first place ranks in the final round. Sridharan becomes the first extemper to win consecutive International Extemp titles at TFA since Jeff Geels of Southlake Carroll High School won three consecutive championships between 2003 and 2005. Junyuan Tan of Alief Kerr High School was the third place finisher.

Saint Mary’s Hall won its first TFA extemp championship in United States Extemp when Marshall Webb edged out Neil Patel of Plano West High School by one rank. Webb won a majority of the first place ranks in the final round, but Patel’s string of second place ranks was nearly enough to win as Webb’s other two final round ranks were three’s. David Dam of Westwood High School finished in third place.

All of the finalists at the tournament received an automatic qualification to the 2015 Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. Six extempers were not previously qualified to this year’s TOC and thereby earn an entry into the tournament this May.

2015 Tarheel Forensic League State Tournament: Leech Gives Durham Five Winners in Six Years; Kingaby Takes Close Second

[fblike]

Durham Academy claimed its fifth extemporaneous speaking state championship in six years last weekend at the North Carolina Tarheel Forensic League State Tournament. Connor Leech of Durham defeated Elizabeth Kingaby of Central Cabarrus High School by two ranks for the title, thereby continuing an impressive streak of dominance by Durham in the category. However, Kingaby nearly won the championship, taking two of the three first place ranks in the final round. An errant sixth place rank doomed her title hopes.

Both Leech and Kingaby were return finalists, with Leech finishing fourth at last year’s state tournament and Kingaby finishing third.

In addition to Leech’s victory, Durham had two other finalists. Abhishek Kodumagulla took third and Jackson Dellinger took fifth.

Four extempers earned an automatic qualification to the 2015 Extemp TOC at Northwestern University by virtue of making the final round at the tournament. They are indicated in italics below.

The Ohio High School Speech League (OHSSL) held its state tournament last weekend at Canfield and Boardman High Schools. Forty-seven extempers participated in the International Extemp half of the tournament and fifty extempers participated in the United States Extemp half.

In International Extemp, Brenden Kost of Wauseon High School won his school’s first championship in the category, finishing two ranks ahead of Priya Podugu of Jackson High School. Podugu was trying to give Jackson its third International Extemp winner in the last four seasons. Wake Forest champion Yijia Liang of Upper Arlington High School finished three ranks back, taking third place. Allison Christopher of Ursuline High School finished fourth, which was three places better than her showing last season.

In United States Extemp, Berthy Feng of the Laurel School posted a four rank margin of victory over Brianna Ledsome of Niles McKinley High School. Feng’s victory gives the Laurel School two United States Extemp state champions in the last three years. Jad Hamdan of Jackson High School, who finished runner-up last season, ended the tournament in third place, five ranks behind Feng.

Eleven extempers earned an automatic qualification to this year’s Extemp TOC at Northwestern University by making the final round of their respective extemp category. Those earning an automatic qualification are indicated in italics below.

2015 Iowa Forensic League All-Iowa Finals: Des Moines Roosevelt Continues Its Dominance as Drane and Thompson Claim State Championships

[fblike]

Des Moines Roosevelt High School continued its domination of the Iowa extemp circuit as it swept both extemporaneous speaking categories at last week’s Iowa High School Forensic League All-Iowa Finals for the seventh consecutive year.

In International Extemp, Daniel Drane of Des Moines Roosevelt won his first state championship, defeating Maxwell Fenton of Dowling Catholic High School by four ranks. Drane’s win marks the ninth straight win for Des Moines Roosevelt in the category. Josh Kinyon of Bettendorf High School placed third.

In United States Extemp, Jacob Thompson of Des Moines Roosevelt defeated teammate Regan Copple by four ranks to claim his first state championship. This is Des Moines Roosevelt’s seventh consecutive USX victory. Nicholas Adam Johnston of Clarke Columbus High School took third.

Aside from Drane and Thompson, none of the other finalists had pre-qualified to this year’s Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. As a result, Iowa qualified eleven new extempers as TOC rules stipulate that all state finalists automatically qualify for the tournament.  Those who qualified to the TOC by virtue of making the final round of their respective extemporaneous speaking category are indicated in italics below.

2015 Florida Forensic League State Championship Tournament: Wexler and Graham Live Up To Their Billing and Capture Their First State Titles

Two of the top five extempers in this year’s National Points Race won state championships at last week’s Florida Forensic League State Championship Tournament. In International Extemp, Noah Wexler of Nova Senior High School, who is ranked fifth in the country, achieved an eight-rank victory over Andrew Langford of Lake Highland Preparatory School. This is Wexler’s first state championship and it is the first time that a Nova extemper has won the International Extemp category in seven years. Nova had four of the six finalists in the category, with Sanjay Supan finishing third, Adele Stock finishing fourth, and Eleanor Bock finishing sixth.

In United States Extemp, National Points Race leader Justin Graham of Trinity Preparatory School defeated teammate Nathaniel Saffran by four ranks to claim his first state championship. Saffran was attempting to give his family back-to-back winners in the category, as his brother Miles won the United States Extemp championship last season. Graham and Saffran tied each other in the final round, but Graham had a better semi-final performance, thereby giving him the edge in the cumulatively tabbed tournament. Daniel Greene of the University School finished third.

All of the finalists earned an automatic qualification to this year’s 2015 Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. Three extempers – Greene and Samantha Koreman of the University School and Oscar Larraza of Nova – give Florida three additional qualifiers to the TOC.

2015 Illinois High School Association State Speech Final: There’s No Tie This Year as Abiona Defeats Patel by One Rank to Claim Sandburg’s First Championship

[fblike]

This year’s Illinois High School Association State Speech Final was primed as a showdown between Parth Patel of Huntley High School and Vinesh Kannan of the Illinois Math and Science Academy. Last year both extempers, along with Saumya Jain of Neuqua Valley High School, shared the state championship after an unbreakable three-way tie. However, the anticipated story did not go as planned as Kannan finished one rank out of the final round and Moyo Abiona of Carl Sandburg High School defeated Patel by one rank to win Sandburg’s first-ever extemporaneous speaking state championship.

Abiona had an interesting road to the final, being one of the last extempers to make the break into the round with a cumulative score of twelve. Once there, though, Abiona took control of the tournament, winning three of the five available first place ranks. Although Patel had a better cumulative score across all five judges, Illinois drops the lowest rank from a competitor’s final round total. This enabled Abiona to shed a fifth place rank and win with a 1-1-1-2 composite versus Patel’s 1-1-2-2.

Aside from Patel, the final round also featured another return finalist, Bethany Dain of Belleville West High School. Dain took fifth place at the tournament, which was an improvement over her sixth place finish last year.

Steven Chun of Hinsdale Central High School, who finished third, was the only extemper in the final round to have pre-qualified for this year’s Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. By virtue of TOC rules, which allow for the automatic qualification of 2015 state finalists (as long as their tournaments are held prior to April 2), Illinois qualified five new extempers to this year’s TOC. Those acquiring a qualifying leg are indicated in italics below.

2015 Maine Forensic Association State Tournament: Westberry Goes Straight 1’s in the Final Round to Stage a Comeback Victory

[fblike]

Along with Montana, Maine became one of the first states to hold its state championship tournament when it hosted the state’s best extemporaneous speakers at Lewistown High School last weekend. This year’s Maine Forensic Association (MFA) crowned Abby Westberry of Maranacook Community High School as its state champion. The MFA State Tournament is cumulative and Westberry staged a comeback in the final round, going straight one’s among the three finals judges and securing a three rank margin of victory over Desmond Molloy of Falmouth High School.

Justin Ramos of Skowhegan Area High School entered the final round in first place, having secured three first place ranks during the three preliminary rounds. However, his cumulative score of eleven in the final round prevented him from becoming state champion.

The final round was dominated by three schools as Maranacook Community High School, Skowhegan Area High School, and Cape Elizabeth High School each had two extempers reach that stage of the tournament.

All of the extempers who reached the final round earned an automatic qualification to this year’s Extemp TOC at Northwestern University, as TOC guidelines give state finalists an automatic entry into the tournament.
