Ontario Premier Doug Ford has said that he would consider cutting power to these states if President Trump’s tariffs against Canada continue, which include a 25% tariff on imported goods and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy. Thus far, Ford has planned to implement a 25% surcharge on Canadian electricity that is sent to these areas.

Friedrich Merz, who is likely Germany’s next chancellor, has said that it time for Europe to look into handling its own security. Germany stopped compulsory military service in 2011.

Druze. The community has a religion that incorporates Islamic and Christian beliefs. The Druze have alleged that Syrian security services were targeting them, prompting a statement from Israel that it would use the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to defend them in southwestern Damascus. The Israeli government has also told the international community that it needs to protect Syria’s Kurdish population.
6. What viral disease has been spreading in Texas and has had reported cases in other states?

Measles. A school-age child in Lubbock, Texas who was not vaccinated against it died last week, which was the first U.S. measles death in a decade. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 164 measles cases have been reported across the country. All but 5% of cases are in unvaccinated populations and the majority of cases (146) are in Texas.
7. Turkey achieved a ceasefire with which group last week?

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The PKK has been at war with Turkey since August 1984. Its goal is to create an independent Kurdish state and secure more cultural autonomy for Turkey’s Kurdish population. It was announced last week that Turkish authorities agreed to a ceasefire with the PKK. It followed an announcement by PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who Turkey has imprisoned since 1999, for PKK fighters to disarm. It is not the first ceasefire between the two sides, though, and prior ceasefires in the 1990s and 2010s broke down.
8. Which former presidential candidate announced that they were running for the Ohio governorship in 2026?

9. What is President Trump’s “gold card” proposal about?

Trump proposed last week that the U.S. should offer a “gold card” to wealthy foreigners so they could live and work in the United States. This would be an upgraded green card and go at the rate of $5 million. It would replace EB-5 visas that were created in 1990 and are available to those who spent $1 million on a company that employs at least ten people.

It was a stunning turn of developments that have led to fears that the Trump administration is on the verge of abandoning Ukraine entirely.
