Today, eight extempers competed in the fifth annual George Mason University Patriot Games Extemp Round Robin. Seven one-on-one preliminary rounds set up a final between Nabeel Zewail of San Marino High School in California and Ben Constine of Yorktown High School in Virginia, which Zewail won for his second career national circuit championship. Reports indicate that Catherine Chiodo of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa finished third.
The following extempers were non-placing participants in this year’s Round Robin: Emily Bell of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Missouri, Joe Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina, Emily Martin of Boone County High School in Kentucky, Jason Singh of Green Valley High School in Nevada, and Alex Song of Millburn High School in New Jersey.
George Mason’s Patriot Games Tournament, which is an Extemp TOC qualifier and a third tier tournament in the 2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race, begins tomorrow. Zewail will attempt to become the third extemper in tournament history to win the Round Robin and the Patriot Games Tournament in the same year.
