2015 Iowa Forensic League All-Iowa Finals: Des Moines Roosevelt Continues Its Dominance as Drane and Thompson Claim State Championships

[fblike]

Des Moines Roosevelt High School continued its domination of the Iowa extemp circuit as it swept both extemporaneous speaking categories at last week’s Iowa High School Forensic League All-Iowa Finals for the seventh consecutive year.

In International Extemp, Daniel Drane of Des Moines Roosevelt won his first state championship, defeating Maxwell Fenton of Dowling Catholic High School by four ranks. Drane’s win marks the ninth straight win for Des Moines Roosevelt in the category. Josh Kinyon of Bettendorf High School placed third.

In United States Extemp, Jacob Thompson of Des Moines Roosevelt defeated teammate Regan Copple by four ranks to claim his first state championship. This is Des Moines Roosevelt’s seventh consecutive USX victory. Nicholas Adam Johnston of Clarke Columbus High School took third.

Aside from Drane and Thompson, none of the other finalists had pre-qualified to this year’s Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. As a result, Iowa qualified eleven new extempers as TOC rules stipulate that all state finalists automatically qualify for the tournament.  Those who qualified to the TOC by virtue of making the final round of their respective extemporaneous speaking category are indicated in italics below.

Strategy: “Lone Wolf” Extemping

[fblike]

by Logan Scisco

strategyA large majority of extempers compete as part of a team.  They allocate cutting assignments for everyone on the squad, may critique each other’s speeches in practice, and provide moral support for each other tournaments.  However, there is another type of extemper:  the so-called “lone wolf.”  “Lone wolf” extempers compete on their own, not having a larger team to rely upon.  “Lone wolf” extempers are becoming increasingly common as more homeschool students have begun participating in extemporaneous speaking across the country.  This strategy piece will provide some tips on how “lone wolf” extempers can prosper.

2015 Florida Forensic League State Championship Tournament: Wexler and Graham Live Up To Their Billing and Capture Their First State Titles

[fblike]

Two of the top five extempers in this year’s National Points Race won state championships at last week’s Florida Forensic League State Championship Tournament. In International Extemp, Noah Wexler of Nova Senior High School, who is ranked fifth in the country, achieved an eight-rank victory over Andrew Langford of Lake Highland Preparatory School. This is Wexler’s first state championship and it is the first time that a Nova extemper has won the International Extemp category in seven years. Nova had four of the six finalists in the category, with Sanjay Supan finishing third, Adele Stock finishing fourth, and Eleanor Bock finishing sixth.

In United States Extemp, National Points Race leader Justin Graham of Trinity Preparatory School defeated teammate Nathaniel Saffran by four ranks to claim his first state championship. Saffran was attempting to give his family back-to-back winners in the category, as his brother Miles won the United States Extemp championship last season. Graham and Saffran tied each other in the final round, but Graham had a better semi-final performance, thereby giving him the edge in the cumulatively tabbed tournament. Daniel Greene of the University School finished third.

All of the finalists earned an automatic qualification to this year’s 2015 Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. Three extempers – Greene and Samantha Koreman of the University School and Oscar Larraza of Nova – give Florida three additional qualifiers to the TOC.

This R&D covers the current political debate surrounding the Department of Homeland Security.  Republicans critical of President Obama’s executive action on immigration looked to cut funding for the Department, which created a crisis on Capitol Hill since Democrats refused to pass an appropriations bill without full funding.  Two days ago, House Republicans conceded by passing a “clean” bill for the Department of Homeland Security, but critics question whether having a large bureaucracy to handle terrorist threats to the U.S. homeland is worth the cost.

This R&D provides resources on U.S.-Israelis relations.  Israel holds parliamentary elections on March 17 and it is an open secret that President Barack Obama supports those running against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  Both men have an icy relationship, with Netanyahu opposing Obama’s efforts to reach a nuclear deal with Iran and fuming about his criticisms of Israeli settlement construction.  Netanyahu addressed the U.S. Congress yesterday, but President Obama refused to meet with him.

Jahnsen’s teammate Jack Sezauer took second place and AJ Tsang of Eagle River High School took third.

In United States Extemp, Foster Bimbaum of West Anchorage High School won his first state championship. His victory over Connor Van Alstine of Dimond High School gives West Anchorage its second champion in United States Extemp in the last three seasons. Robert Hockema of Homer High School finished third.

All of the finalists earned an automatic qualification to the 2015 Extemporaneous Speaking TOC at Northwestern University.

The FCC’s Net Neutrality Decision

[fblike]

Last Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on a party-line vote decided to reclassify broadband as a telecommunications service.  This allows the FCC to impose more regulations on broadband Internet providers as if they were a public utility.  The FCC intervened due to concerns that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will discriminate against network traffic, speeding up some Internet sites that would be willing to pay them a special fee, while reducing the speeds of other sites that either refused to pay or were in competition with other operations of the ISP.  This so-called “net neutrality,” which treats all Internet data the same, has become a highly charged political issue, with conservatives warning that the FCC’s decision will stifle innovation and liberals championing the FCC’s decision as a victory for consumer interests.

This topic brief will discuss the road to the FCC’s recent net neutrality decision, what its regulations will do, and the potential political and legal battles ahead regarding net neutrality.  Extempers should read last year’s brief on net neutrality to obtain sufficient background on this issue, as this topic brief will center more on the FCC’s vote.
