2022-2023 Extemp Central National Points Race: New Standings After Glenbrooks & Florida Blue Key!

New standings for the 2022-2023 Extemp Central National Points Race have been released!  These results reflect the outcomes of the Glenbrooks and Florida Blue Key.  You can find them by clicking on the “National Points Race” tab at the top of the page or by clicking here.

This weekend features dual fourth tier points opportunities as George Mason University hosts its Patriot Games event in Fairfax, Virginia and the University of Texas-Austin holds its Longhorn Classic in Austin, Texas.  All competitors who reach the semi-final round and beyond at those events will earn National Points Race points.  If a competitor breaks to semi-finals in International and United States Extemp at the Longhorn Classic, their best finish will be used for the standings so as to avoid double counting.

Looking at the early entry list for the Longhorn, many competitors in the top 25 will clash there so expect a shakeup in the standings before the end of first semester.  The Longhorn could also have significant implications for bids to this year’s Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA) Extemp Round Robin, which returns to its traditional January slot on the calendar this season.

2022 Glenbrooks: Paltzik Dominates, Wins Third Consecutive National Circuit Event of Season

Several weeks ago Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High School hosted the 43rd edition of their annual speech and debate tournament in Northbrook, Illinois. Like many tournaments this year, this was the first Glenbrooks to be in person since the COVID-19 pandemic. 64 extempers clashed in the first third tier tournament of the season.

#1 McKinley Paltzik of Phoenix Country Day School (AZ) maintained her winning streak in national circuit events this season, capturing the title by a ten rank margin after securing first place ranks from all five of the final round judges.

Fellow Arizonan #13 Sruti Peddi of BASIS Scottsdale finished second, four ranks ahead of Tyler Crivella of Seven Lakes High School (TX).

#6 Charlotte Reitman of NSU University School (FL), the winner of the National Speech and Debate Season Opener, reached the final round and finished sixth. Reitman finished behind Grant Killoran of Marquette University High School (WI) and Pierce McDade of University High School (IL). McDade finished one rank out of third place.

There were several ranked extempers that reached the quarter-final round before bowing out. These included #3 Theodore Gercken of the College Preparatory School (CA) and #15 Lauren Kim of Flintridge Preparatory School (CA).

Paltzik will receive 100 points in the National Points Race for winning the tournament and all extempers that reached the quarter-final round will earn points.

New National Points Race standings will be updated by Friday night.

Glenbrooks is a quarter-final bid for the Extemp TOC at Northwestern University and, based on the entry numbers in this year’s tournament, all finalists will earn bids to the University of Kentucky TOC.

Here are the results of the 2022 Glenbrooks (Click here for tab sheet):
