2021 National Speech and Debate Season Opener Hosted by UK: Kind Earns First National Circuit Victory of the Season, Becomes First National Points Race Leader of 2021-2022

The 2021-2022 national circuit season kicked off last weekend online as the University of Kentucky hosted its annual National Speech and Debate Season Opener. The tournament, a fifth tier National Points Race event, drew fifty-one competitors. Daniel Kind of Lake Highland Preparatory School (FL) was the tournament champion, defeating Cade Savoy of Teurlings Catholic High School (LA) by three ranks in the final round.

Kind and Savoy were the only competitors in the final round to have a cumulative score below ten among the three judges. Marc Zavarro of Western High School (FL), a semi-finalist in International Extemp at last year’s NSDA National Tournament, finished third with ten ranks, three ahead of Dana Ko of Pine Creek High School (CO), who took fourth place.

Solon High School (OH) had two competitors reach the final round, Dev Ahuja and Vikram Sundaram. They finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Ananya Singh of Centennial High School (TX) finished seventh.

Kind, who won last season’s Barkley Forum and Harvard, will become the season’s first National Points Race leader. All competitors in the final round who placed in the top six will earn points toward this year’s standings. The first standings of the National Points Race will be posted Thursday evening.

Although the tournament is not a qualifier for the Extemp Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University, all of the finalists earned a bid to this year’s season’s UK TOC.

R&D from Prepd: Brazilian Politics

This week’s R&D is on recent developments in Brazilian politics.  President Jair Bolsonaro recently called on his supporters to gather in the capital of Brasilia to express their support for his administration and protest the actions of the nation’s Supreme Court.  Brazil will not have a presidential election until fall, but observers fear that Bolsonaro is riling up his base to challenge the result of that election.  There were also fears that Bolsonaro’s backers would try to overrun the Supreme Court building, which would be Brazil’s version of the January 6 Capitol riot in the United States.

2021-2022 Extemp Central National Points Race: Discussing This Year’s Structure

With the national circuit season about to begin at the National Season Opener hosted by the University of Kentucky, Extemp Central wants to break down the structure of this year’s National Points Race.

The National Points was a competition that Extemp Central began during the 2008-2009 season.  It was inspired by the poker magazine Card Player.  The goal is to recognize the extemper that performed the best across a system of nationally recognized events during the season.  We recognize that any ranking system is problematic as some great extempers belong to teams that do not go to many, if any, national circuit competitions.  The National Points Race tries to weigh some of this by ranking post-season and major tournaments higher than regular season events, with the exception of Harvard, the biggest invitational tournament on the calendar.  The winner of the competition receives a trophy from Extemp Central, funded by the efforts of our generous readers and supporters.

Six extempers have won the National Points Race and curiously, no state has had a repeat winner.  Due to some interruptions of our service, we have not done the National Points Race since 2016, when it was won by Justin Graham of Trinity Preparatory School (FL).  Graham finished that season with a record 876 points in the standings.  We look forward to resuming the race this season.

Due to the unpredictable nature of where the COVID-19 pandemic will take us, some tournaments have not released their dates or exact information yet.  If you see a tournament on the calendar that we do not have a date for (or last year’s results), please send them to us at [email protected] so we can correct the calendar.

Today’s R&D is brought to you by Prepd (pronounced “prepped”). Prepd is building debate technology that helps extempers and congressional debaters research, practice, and compete. Visit www.prepd.in to learn more.

This week’s R&D is on Canada’s elections.  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for a snap election last week in a bid to win a governing majority and secure the votes necessary to enlarge COVID-19 relief and pass climate change legislation.  Currently, Canada’s Liberal Party, which Trudeau leads, is ruling with a plurality of votes in the Canadian parliament.  The elections are scheduled for September 20.
