This R&D provides resources on the death of Uzbek President Islam Karimov. Karimov governed the country for more than fifteen years, ruling from September 1, 1991 to his death on September 2. This made Karimov Uzbekistan’s only president since becoming independent of the Soviet Union. He regime was criticized for human rights violations, but his supporters say that he did what was necessary to protect Uzbekistan from terrorism. There are concerns that the succession fight could produce a civil war within the country.
