The Extemp Central National Points Race is a competition designed to reward extempers for placing high at selected national circuit competitions throughout the year. Tournaments are placed into five tiers based on their level of prestige and each tier awards a different amount of points towards the top six finishers (CFL and NFL Nationals award points for semi-finalists). At the end of the season, the winner of the National Points Race will receive a customary glass trophy recognizing their achievement courtesy of Extemp Central.
Extemp Central also sponsors a National Team Points Race competition. When extempers compete and place highly at selected tournaments they earn points for themselves and their school. In the case of a tie, the number of finalists schools have had throughout the year is used as a tiebreaker.
After three days of competition, the final rounds for International and United States extemporaneous speaking are set for NFL Nationals. Of those in the National Points Race, James Mohan of Danville High School (Kentucky), Jacob Baker of Bellarmine College Prep (California), and Steven Elliott of Lakeville North High School (Minnesota) are in the International Extemp final. In United States extemp, CFL national champion Dylan Slinger of Lakeville South High School (Minnesota) and Oscar Wang of San Marino High School (California) are still alive. National Points Race leader Dillon Huff dropped in the quarter-final round of International extemp and that has given all of the extempers listed above an opportunity to walk away with the National Points Race trophy tomorrow evening. Nabeel Zewail and Aaron Lutkowitz, where were ranked behind Huff in the National Points Race, were eliminated from the IX octofinal and quarter-final rounds, respectively.
Based on the fact that the finalists listed above need to accumulate 320 points to pass Dillon Huff and take the National Points Race title, Extemp Central has broken down what placings the extempers in those rounds will need to do that. The number listed beside the placing is what their point total will look like if they achieve that position. The number in parenthesis is the amount of points they will earn if they earn that placing and win the final round.
The National Forensic League national tournament next week in Kansas City, Missouri will decide this year’s Extemp Central National Points Race and National Team Points Race. NFL Nationals is the only first tier tournament in the National Points Race and unlike last year, the title is not clinched prior to the tournament. The fourteen extempers who make the semi-final round will be battling for the 200 points that will go to the tournament champion. Extempers will then earn points on a graduate scale from 200 to 25 based on their finish from first through fourteenth place. Based on the fact that extempers can only earn a maximum of 225 points at NFL Nationals, all extempers who have less than 125 points in the National Points Race are mathematically eliminated from winning the championship. The following extempers have a mathematical chance of winning the title:
The 2009-2010 Extemp Central National Points Race standings have been updated to reflect the results of the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. After new results were put in, the National Points Race has become more competitive and the National Team Points Race has a new leader. There are two National Points Race tournaments remaining: CFL and NFL Nationals. CFL is a third tier tournament and will provide 100 points to the winner. NFL Nationals is the only first tier tournament on the schedule and it will provide 200 points to its winner and 25 additional bonus points to the winners of the USX and IX final rounds. With these tournaments remaining, the National Points Race is still up in the air so keep following Extemp Central through NFL to find out who the 2009-2010 National Points Race champion will be.
Unsurprisingly, after the Harvard Invitational and the California Invitational there is some shake up in the National Points Race standings. While the top of the standings did not go through much change, there were significant shakeups in the middle of the pack for the individual and team points race contests. Also, don’t forget that this weekend is the end of the regular season on the national circuit with the Harvard Invitational, a third tier tournament, and the California Invitational taking place at Berkeley. Good luck to those competitors that are competing this weekend.
The newest standings for the 2009-2010 National Points Race and National Team Points Race have been posted. After the MBA Extemp Round Robin, Dillon Huff of Southlake Carroll High School in Texas has expanded his lead in the National Points Race. Huff’s victory has also enabled Southlake to take over the #1 spot in the National Team Points Race. MBA was the sole second tier tournament on this year’s tournament schedule.
Barkley Forum will be the next National Points Race tournament. It is a fourth tier tournament and will award 70 points to the winner. It will be held in two weeks in Atlanta, Georgia and many of the top extempers in the National Points Race are expected to be there.

The standings for the 2009-2010 Extemp Central National Points Race have been updated. Not surprisingly, Dillon Huff of Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas has taken the lead for the first time this season in the National Points Race after his victory last weekend at the George Mason University Patriot Games. Due to his victory, which awarded him 70 points, Huff has established a mere ten point lead over Glenbrooks winner Steven Elliott of Lakeville North High School in Lakeville, Minnesota.
In the team points race, San Marino High School in San Marino, California has jumped seven spots in the standings and into first place thanks to the efforts of Oscar Wang who placed second at George Mason University to complement the efforts of teammate Nabeel Zewail who placed second at the Yale University Invitational earlier in the season.

Just like last year, the Extemp Central National Points Race is close heading into the Glenbrooks this weekend. No extemper has managed to gain points at more than one of the first three tournaments that count for points in the season: Wake Forest, Yale, and St. Mark’s. Similarly, the National Teams Points Race is close going into Glenbrooks thanks to several teams gaining multiple finalists at the first three major national circuit tournaments of the year.
The Glenbrooks should serve to shake out the rankings better prior to the George Mason University Patriot Games tournament which will be the last tournament that will count for points in the National Points Race for the first semester. The Glenbrooks will award 100 points to the winner since it is a third tier tournament and with many recognized names attending someone could break away from the field by the end of next weekend. Similarly, if someone who is not ranked wins Glenbrooks and most of the top half of the current National Points Race field fails to find, we could end up with some very jumbled standings heading into George Mason and the Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin in two months.
The individual and team standings for the 2009-2010 Extemp Central National Points race have been updated after the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational. You can access them by clicking on the National Points Race tab at the top of this page. Find out where Dillon Huff, the winner of both halves of the tournament and last year’s third place finisher in the National Points Race is making his debut in this year’s standings. Also, see where Plano Senior High School of Plano, Texas is in the National Team Points Race after racking up 75 points at St. Mark’s.
Don’t forget that the next big tournament, the Glenbrooks, is a third tier tournament worth 100 points. It could alter this year’s National Points Race standings to a significant degree.
To avoid double counting at St. Mark’s, Extemp Central awarded points to extempers based on their finish in both the IX and USX portions of the tournament. The top six extempers based on points accumulated would be ranked first through sixth and they would receive the fifth tier points for the National Points Race.
Here are the top six finishers at St. Mark’s and the points they will receive in the National Points Race. Sam Scott and Shahid Ahmed of Plano Senior High School received the same amount of points based on their combined finishes and had the second and third tier points split between them because of the tie.
1st: Dillon Huff (Southlake Carroll High School, Texas)—40 pts.
T2nd: Sam Scott (Plano Senior High School, Texas)—32.5 pts.
T2nd: Shahid Ahmed (Plano Senior High School, Texas)—32.5 pts.
4th: Haydn Forrest (L.C. Anderson High School, Texas)—15 pts.
5th: Mirza Germovic (Des Moines Roosevelt High School, Iowa)—12 pts.
6th: Shikha Garg (Plano Senior High School, Texas)—10 pts.
The Extemp Central National Points Race will be adjusted to accompany these changes within the next few days.
The new 2009-2010 Extemp Central National Points Race and National Teams Points Race standings have been updated. To access them, click on the “Nat’l Points Race” tab at the top of the page.
We have a new leader in the standings: Aaron Lutkowitz of Montgomery Bell Academy in Tennessee, fresh off of his victory at Yale. Lutkowitz has also powered MBA into the top spot in the team points race. From all indications, he plans to attend St. Mark’s so he will be looking to add to his lead at that tournament.
The next major tournament in the National Points Race: The St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational. It will be a fifth tier tournament, awarding 40 points to the best performing extemper in the U.S. and IX portions combined.
Extemp Central is proud to start the second official year of the Extemp Central National Points Race, a competition that awards competitors who have succeeded prestigious tournaments throughout the year. Unlike last year, the National Points Race standings will be updated shortly after one of the tournaments in the standings takes place. The role of The Ex Files will be to provide a detailed summary of changes in the standings and will present other data such as wins, top three finishes, and the number of final rounds for competitors.
