At the 2011 Yale Invitational Tournament, which was a fourth tier tournament in this year’s National Points Race and took place several weeks ago, Chase Harrison of Millburn High School in New Jersey came out on top.  Harrison defeated teammate Henry Chapman for the title.  Harrison becomes the foruth extemper from Millburn to win the Yale tournament since 2004.  The final round featured a litany of competitors who made their names known in last year’s National Points Race.  Alessandro Pauri from Flower Mound High School in Texas, who was the overall winner of the St. Mark’s tournament last year according to Extemp Central’s rankings, placed third and Joe Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina, who was a runner-up at the Wake Forest National Early Bird, placed fifth.  All of the extempers who broke at Yale earned a bid to the 2012 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions.  All of those who made the semi-final round and beyond earned National Points Race points.
