The New Jersey Forensic League (NJFL) held its state tournament last weekend at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township, New Jersey. In International Extemp, Vaikunth Balaji of Ridge High School defeated Princeton champion Cristine Oh of Montville Township High School by three ranks. Balaji’s teammate Sejal Waghray finished in third place. Balaji’s victory marks the first time that Ridge has won the International Extemp category since 2010 and Ridge placed three extempers in the final round.
In United States Extemp, Chase Harrison of Millburn High School overcame three years of frustration and runner-up finishes at the state level by defeating Monica Coscia of Montville Township by three ranks. Harrison’s victory ends a five year winning streak for Ridge High School in the category. Thomas Abel of Delbarton School took third.
All of the extempers that reached the final rounds of each category had previously qualified to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. As a result, no extempers earned automatic TOC bids through the NJFL State Tournament.
