Texas hosted the largest of the state tournaments held last weekend as more than one hundred extempers competed in International and United States Extemp at the 2014 Texas Forensic Association (TFA) State Tournament. Despite the large field, Plano Senior High School won both categories. In International Extemp, Abhinav Sridharan won by four ranks over Azhar Hussain of Southlake Carroll Senior High School. Sridharan becomes the first Plano Senior extemper to win International Extemp since 1989. Gregory Ross of Lamar High School (Houston) took third.

In United States Extemp, Ash Malhotra became the first Plano Senior extemper to win the category since 2011 and won by four ranks over 2013 NFL United States Extemp finalist Caro Achar from Cypress Creek High School. Cosmo Albrecht of Robert E. Lee High School, who won the United States Extemp portion of the Winston Churchill Classic this season, finished third.

Four extempers in each category earned an automatic qualification to this year’s Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. They are indicated in italics in the results listing.

Extemp March Madness rolls on this coming weekend as Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky (KHSSL), Utah, (3A-5A), Washington, and Wyoming will host their state tournaments. If you get the results of these tournaments, please send them to us so we can post them on our website. If any of our readers in New Mexico know the results of their state tournament, please send those to me as well.
