Des Moines Roosevelt High School continued its domination of the Iowa extemp circuit as it swept both extemporaneous speaking categories at last week’s Iowa High School Forensic League All-Iowa Finals for the seventh consecutive year.

In International Extemp, Daniel Drane of Des Moines Roosevelt won his first state championship, defeating Maxwell Fenton of Dowling Catholic High School by four ranks. Drane’s win marks the ninth straight win for Des Moines Roosevelt in the category. Josh Kinyon of Bettendorf High School placed third.

In United States Extemp, Jacob Thompson of Des Moines Roosevelt defeated teammate Regan Copple by four ranks to claim his first state championship. This is Des Moines Roosevelt’s seventh consecutive USX victory. Nicholas Adam Johnston of Clarke Columbus High School took third.

Aside from Drane and Thompson, none of the other finalists had pre-qualified to this year’s Extemp TOC at Northwestern University. As a result, Iowa qualified eleven new extempers as TOC rules stipulate that all state finalists automatically qualify for the tournament.  Those who qualified to the TOC by virtue of making the final round of their respective extemporaneous speaking category are indicated in italics below.
