This week’s R&D covers the ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.  The United States backed out of a 2015 framework on Iran’s nuclear program during the Trump administration, something that President Biden is looking to reverse.  However, ongoing talks in Vienna, Austria between Iran and negotiators from the United States, Russia, China, Great Britain, Germany, and France are deadlocked over Iran’s demand that all American sanctions against it end.  Some fear that the U.S. not joining a new nuclear accord could mean that Iran gets a nuclear weapon, potentially triggering a military conflict with Israel, who fears a nuclear Iran threatens its survivability.

Today’s R&D covers Iran’s nuclear program.  Iran has been under a cloud of suspicion since 2002 and the United States, France, Germany, Great Britain, China, and Russia – referred to as the P5+ 1 – have been negotiating with the Islamic Republic in an attempt to make its nuclear program more transparent.  Last month, the talks between Iran and the P5+1 nations were extended through November 24.  The United Nations is also seeking more proof from Iran that its nuclear program has a non-military purpose.

Topic Brief: Iranian Nuclear Controversy

Overview

Since the dropping of two nuclear weapons on Japan, and the subsequent Soviet push to develop nuclear weapon, the countries who have nuclear capabilities has been one of the foremost concerns of the international community.  So when Iran started enriching uranium, the international community got a little bit worried.  When Iran refused to cooperate with the IAEA – they got a little bit angry.  However, three UN sanctions later, little has changed with the IAEA condemning the lack of Iranian cooperation on March 27th of this year.  Since a country (Iran) that has promised to destroy another that already has nuclear weapons (Israel) may or may not be developing nuclear weapon is kind of a big deal. Oh, and because confirmation of such a nuclear program could justify Israeli/US attacks on Iran, let’s take a look at what is going on and what that means for the world.
