This R&D provides resources on the e-mail scandal that continues to engulf former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.  The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently took control of Clinton’s private e-mail server that she used during her time in office.  Officials are investigating whether classified information was mishandled, something that the Clinton camp has strenuously denied.  Clinton’s critics contend that the private server was used to limit the scope of federal record-keeping requirements and Republicans have continued to use the issue against Clinton on the campaign trail.

This R&D provides resources on the British Labour Party’s leadership election.  Ed Miliband stepped down as leader when the Labour Party lost twenty-six seats in the British parliamentary elections earlier in the year.  Reports say that Labour may choose Jeremy Corbyn as its new leader, but some observers say that Corbyn is too far to the left to help Labour regain office.  The voting in the leadership election will begin this Friday (August 14) and the results will be announced on September 12.

Today’s R&D provides resources on China winning the bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.  Beijing will be the host city for the event, becoming the first city in history to host both a Winter and Summer Olympics.  The decision by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) was made somewhat by default as there were only two choices – Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan – after the Norwegian government withdrew its support for Oslo hosting the Games.  Human rights advocates have criticized the choice, arguing that China’s human rights record has not improved since hosting the Summer Olympics in 2008, but the IOC says that Beijing’s hosting of the Winter Olympics will expose hundreds of millions of people to winter sports. The IOC has also had to deal with the reluctance of some Western cities to host future Olympics as Boston, Massachusetts abandoned a possible bid for hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics due to concerns about cost.

This R&D provides resources on the upcoming Fox News Republican presidential debate.  The debate will take place on Thursday evening and will feature ten of the seventeen candidates seeking the party’s presidential nomination.  While early debates usually do not attract significant attention, the sizable lead that Donald Trump has established in national polls makes this first debate a media spectacle.  Trump has tried to downplay his chances and pundits have different advice for the other GOP challengers as to whether or not they should aggressively attack Trump at the event. The seven candidates who do not qualify for the event will get to participate in a separate lower tier debate that will take place before the “main” debate later in the evening.

This R&D provides information on prescription drug costs in the U.S.  Prescription drug spending rose 14% in the U.S. last year, which pharmacies say is due to a rising cost of specialty drugs.  California recently became the first state in the nation to cap co-pays for prescription drugs at $250 a month and other states may follow it lead.  State legislators are also looking into ways that they can make the pricing of prescription drugs more transparent.  Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has proposed granting greater powers to federal authorities to negotiate drug prices to deal with the issue.

This R&D provides resources on Bosnian reconciliation.  The nation suffered a brutal war between 1992 and 1995 between Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs and today there is an uneasy sharing of power between Catholic Croats, Orthodox Serbs, and Muslim Bosniaks.  Nationalist tensions continue to tear at the country and Pope Francis visited last week in an effort to preach ethnic and religious harmony.  He told younger audience members to pursue peace over war and to live lives of integrity and honesty.
