This R&D covers the Ukrainian economy.  The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is providing a $17.5 billion bailout for the country, which will last for the next four years.  In return for IMF aid, the Ukrainian government has promised to reform its energy and banking systems and launch a more aggressive anti-corruption drive.  Ukraine’s currency, the hryvnia, is the world’s worst performing currency this year.

This R&D covers former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.  O’Malley is mulling a possible presidential bid in 2016 and recently took a trip to New Hampshire for a Democratic fundraiser.  O’Malley has said he will wait until spring to decide whether he will officially seek the White House. If O’Malley did decide to join the race he would have a formidable task knocking off former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but he may attract voters from the party’s left-wing base, which is hesitant to back a Clinton presidential bid.

This R&D covers the current political debate surrounding the Department of Homeland Security.  Republicans critical of President Obama’s executive action on immigration looked to cut funding for the Department, which created a crisis on Capitol Hill since Democrats refused to pass an appropriations bill without full funding.  Two days ago, House Republicans conceded by passing a “clean” bill for the Department of Homeland Security, but critics question whether having a large bureaucracy to handle terrorist threats to the U.S. homeland is worth the cost.

This R&D provides resources on U.S.-Israelis relations.  Israel holds parliamentary elections on March 17 and it is an open secret that President Barack Obama supports those running against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  Both men have an icy relationship, with Netanyahu opposing Obama’s efforts to reach a nuclear deal with Iran and fuming about his criticisms of Israeli settlement construction.  Netanyahu addressed the U.S. Congress yesterday, but President Obama refused to meet with him.

This R&D provides resources on Egypt’s fight against Islamic militants.  The Egyptian government has spent the early part of 2015 conducting military strikes on militants on the Sinai peninsula.  Militants there have attacked Egyptian military personnel since a coup ousted the Muslim Brotherhood in July 2013.  The Egyptian military has also directed strikes against members of the Islamic State in Libya last week after the group released a video showing the beheading of Egyptian Christians.

This R&D covers wage growth in the U.S. economy.  Although the U.S. economy is improving, wage growth for Americans has lagged behind, with hourly wages rising 0.5% last month.  Economists are optimistic that significant wage growth could take place in 2015, as businesses such as Wal-Mart have recently decided to raise the pay of its workers to $10 an hour.  If wage growth takes off, it could compel the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in order to temper inflation in the economy.  Creating better wage growth is also a rallying call for those who seek to reduce income inequality in the United States.

This R&D covers Sino-Indian relations.  Although both countries are BRICS members and are agitating for more influence in international institutions, India and China are also geopolitical rivals in Asia.  India, the world’s largest democracy, has close ties with the United States, while China’s communist government has an uneasy relationship with the U.S. due to its role in North Korea and its conflict with Taiwan.  India’s revised GDP figures show that its economy is now growing faster than China, and some economists say that India will have a faster growth rate in the long-term because its population is younger than China’s.

This R&D recaps the resignation of Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber.  Kitzhaber announced his resignation last week after revelations that his long-time fiance, Cylvia Hayes, received sizable payments from environmental groups.  Hayes was an unpaid “energy adviser” to Kitzhaber and Oregon’s attorney general has launched a corruption investigation into the matter.  Kitzhaber was a relatively popular governor, having won re-election to a fourth term in 2014.  His resignation is effective as of today.
