This R&D covers Tony Abbott’s political future.  Abbott is Australia’s prime minister and the leader of its Liberal Party.  He was elected in September 2013, but had to stave off a leadership challenge on Monday after the Liberal Party suffered devastating losses in Victoria and Queensland’s state elections.  Abbott’s opponents argue that his policies are harming the environment and say his policy toward asylum seekers is creating foreign relations headaches with the country’s neighbors.

This R&D provides resources on Atlantic City’s fiscal problems.  The city was once one of the premier gambling locations in America, symbolizing an East Coast version of Las Vegas.  The legalization of gambling in surrounding states, though, has led to significant fiscal problems, as the city has lost half of its gambling revenue since 2006.  Last month, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie appointed Kevin Orr as a part-time legal adviser for an emergency management team that is trying to address the city’s problems.  The team is headed by business restructuring lawyer Kevin Lavin.

This R&D covers the corporate shakeup at McDonald’s.  The company’s previous CEO, Don Thompson, stepped down last week amid declining profits for the fast food chain.  Some argue that McDonald’s is facing thinner profit margins because of better competition, but also changing attitudes about food.  Chief Brand Office Steve Easterbrook is taking over and promising menu changes and allowing customers to build their own burgers with a tap screen menu.

This R&D provides resources on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).  The IMF’s chief function is to be a lender of last resort for indebted nation, but it also serves a role of trying to facilitate more global cooperation on trade and anti-poverty matters.  The IMF’s austerity recommendations have been criticized over the last several decades and The Economist explained on January 31 that the Fund’s capitalization is half of what it was in 2000.  The IMF is also waiting on the U.S. Congress to approve legislation that would increase America’s capital allocation to the Fund and thereby pave the way for a reallocation of votes within the body.

This topic brief covers royal succession in Saudi Arabia.  Last week, King Abdullah passed away and power passed to his half brother Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud.  Prior to assuming the throne, King Salman was the country’s Minister of Defense since 2011.  He is considered a conservative reformist and analysts do not expect Saudi Arabia’s friendly relationship with the United States to change under his watch. What concerns some is that King Salman had ties to radical Islamist groups in the past.

This R&D provides resources on Florida Senator Marco Rubio.  Rumors are that Rubio is planning a 2016 presidential bid, which could make him the second Floridian in the field if former Florida Governor Jeb Bush also decides to run for the White House.  Rubio is up for re-election in 2016 as well, but he has signaled that he will not seek both offices simultaneously.  Rubio has been a strong opponent of President Obama’s moves to improve relations, but his political stock took a hit last year when he supported immigration reform.

This R&D provides resources on pending cases and recent decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court.  The Court will hear oral arguments in the spring about the legalization of gay marriage in all fifty states and is set to rule whether the federal government can provide subsidies to those who purchase health insurance on the federal-run insurance exchange. It is also set to rule on whether federal housing subsidies promote racial segregation.
