This R&D covers the Mexican economy.  The Mexican economy is Latin America’s second largest economy, but there are signs that its economic growth rate is slowing.  President Enrique Nieto has proposed several reforms to make the Mexican economy more efficient and he secured the privatization of Pemex, the state-owned oil company, in December.  The United States has an interest in ensuring that the Mexican economy is successful, as the lack of economic prospects in Mexico has caused an influx of illegal immigrants from the country for the last several decades.

This R&D covers the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which is administered through the Department of Agriculture.  The program was created under President Harry Truman in 1946 and serves more than thirty-one million schoolchildren each day.  First lady Michelle Obama pushed for, and secured, stricter nutrition guidelines on school lunches during her husband’s first term, but those guidelines are now under attack by Republicans, who argue that a “one size fits all” approach to school lunch policy is not in the best interest of children.  Opponents of the first lady’s guidelines also point out that over a million students avoided daily participation in the NSLP last year and that children are throwing away or refusing to eat healthier meals, thereby wasting taxpayer money.

This R&D provides resources on San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who is reportedly President Barack Obama’s choice to become the new secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Castro is seen as a rising star in Democratic politics and a possible 2016 vice-presidential candidate.  He gave the keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

This R&D provides information on claims made to the Arctic region.  The region is thought to be rich in oil and natural gas deposits and nations that border the Arctic (the United States, Russia, Canada, Norway, and Denmark – via Greenland) are prohibited under international law from laying claim to the North Pole and its surrounding areas.  However, as it becomes easier to navigate some of the ice sheets in the region, some experts believe that the international truce over the area will not hold.  In 2007, a Russian submersible planted a Russian flag on the seabed of the North Pole.

This R&D provides resources on South Africa’s recent national elections.  Although economic problems, crime, and corruption scandals were believed to have weakened the ruling African National Congress (ANC) before elections were held, it managed to win another landslide victory.  Still, its 62.2% share of the vote was the lowest that the party had garnered since apartheid ended in 1994.  The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), a party that attracts the support of South Africa’s white minority, won 22.2% of the vote, which is the largest vote total in party history.  The ANC’s victory will likely lead to Jacob Zuma being re-elected as the country’s president.

This R&D provides information on Title IX.  Passed as part of the Education Amendment of 1972, Title IX is widely recognized as raising the funding for women’s athletics, it also mandates that school’s treat men and women equally in education programs.  As a result, it covers sexual harassment and sexual violence because those crimes are deemed to impair the education of both men and women.  Title IX is becoming a public issue again in light of the push to unionize Northwestern University’s football team (which could negatively impact the funding for women’s athletics) and federal investigations into fifty-five colleges and universities for not properly handling sexual abuse complaints.

This R&D gives resources on President Obama’s proposed plan to allow for tolls on America’s interstate highway system. Tolls on the interstate system have not been allowed since the system was built under the Eisenhower administration in the 1950s. The justification for the idea is that gas tax revenues are down as Americans have shifted to more fuel efficient vehicles and more revenue is needed to replace America’s aging infrastructure. Opponents argue that it is another bad government tax scheme, will cause congestion during busy travel months, and that if taxes need to be raised to fund infrastructure, it is better to fund them through a gas tax increase.

This R&D provides resources on Australian and Indonesian relations.  Both countries are prominent actors in Southeast Asia, yet their relations are strained by asylum seekers that use Indonesia as a base to migrate to Australia.  Australia has recently taken to sending boats of asylum seekers back to Indonesia, a move criticized by the United Nations.  Indonesia asserts that Australia’s asylum policy violates its national sovereignty.

This R&D breaks down the Afghan presidential election.  The election is headed to a runoff after no candidate win over fifty percent of the vote.  Abdullah Abdullah, a former Afghan foreign minister, won the first round with 44.9% of the vote.  He will be opposed by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, the country’s former finance minister, who won 31.5% of the first round vote.  Although election officials are looking into complaints of fraud and Mr. Abdullah has declared himself the winner, experts do not believe that enough votes will be disqualified to give Mr. Abdullah the presidency.  The second round election is set to begin on June 7th.

This R&D provides resources on campaign finance reform.  Advocates for campaign finance reform, which entails limiting the contributions of individuals and other lobbying groups, argue that it necessary to protect American democracy.  Opponents of campaign finance reform argue that it is a violation of the First Amendment.  Supreme Court rulings over the last decade have gradually eliminated much of existing campaign finance law.
