This R&D covers Russia’s annexation of Crimea.  95% of Crimeans voted on Sunday to join the Russian Federation and Ukraine is preparing to withdraw is military forces from the area.  The West has condemned Russia’s recent actions and they have placed sanctions on Crimean politicians and Russian government officials who have participated in the annexation controversy.  Western nations have also dubbed the referendum illegitimate due to the presence of Russian forces in Crimea during the vote.  Russia contends that their interference in Crimea was meant to protect its Russian-speaking population and that the vote is a fair expression of self-determination by the Crimean people.

This R&D provides resources on the new SAT.  The College Board recently announced that the SAT’s scoring would be changed from a 2400 composite to a 1600 composite and that the verbal section will no longer include “arcane” words.  Wrong answers will no longer be penalized and the essay portion will be optional as well.  The College Board says that the changes will better reflect that students are learning in high school, but critics argue that the changes are “dumbing down” the test.  Common Core critics also argue that since the SAT is being aligned Common Core Standards that non-Common Core schools will be punished.
