This R&D provides articles on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).  Signed in December 1992 and going into force in January 1994, NAFTA established a free trade zone between the United States, Mexico, and Canada.  Economists have disputed its impact on all three economies, with some arguing that it has bolstered healthy levels of trade and others arguing that it harmed Mexican agriculture and the United States manufacturing sector.  NAFTA is celebrating its twentieth year anniversary this year, so extempers can expect to see questions about it in the coming months.

The financial industry argues that the rule is counterproductive and hurts its business interests, whereas supporters of the rule argue that it is needed to avoid another financial crisis. The resources below provide evidence on Utah’s gay marriage fight.  A U.S. district court judge ruled last Friday that Utah’s constitution ban on gay marriage violated the Fourteenth Amendment, which makes Utah the latest state to have legal gay marriages.  Utah’s state government has vowed to appeal the decision.  Utah’s constitutional ban was approved by a significant number of voters in 2004, when gay marriage opponents used state referendums to increase conservative turnout in that year’s presidential election between President George W. Bush and then-Massachusetts Senator John Kerry.

These resources provide information on the possibility that former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will make a political comeback.  Sarkozy won the 2007 French presidential election, but was defeated by current French President Francois Hollande last year.  Problems with the French economy and existing immigration laws may provide an opportunity for Sarkozy to challenge Hollande in the next French presidential election, not due until 2017.

The links below provide resources for extempers on the purge of Jang Song Thae, the uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.  Mr. Jang had served as a regent for Mr. Kim after he took over for his father Kim Jong-il in 2011.  Reports emerged yesterday that Mr. Jang was executed after confessing to trying to overthrow the government at a special military tribunal.  Mr. Jang’s removal could harm North Korea’s relationship with China and signals that Mr. Kim wants to solidify his grip on power.

The tweets below provide information for extempers about the latest Congressional budget deal, struck between Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). If approved by Congress, the deal will likely avert a federal government shutdown in January. The deal was not the comprehensive package some analysts expected, as entitlement program modifications and a debt ceiling increase are not included. It also fails to extend unemployment benefits.
