The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed a rule requiring backup cameras on all new vehicles by 2014.  The rule would cost the auto industry an estimated $2.7 billion.

Talks fail to achieve limits on Iran’s nuclear program from the Los Angeles Times
In a move that’s about as surprising as the sun coming up every morning, China, Russia, the U.S., France, Germany, and Britain failed to get Iran to agree to limits on its nuclear program.  They intend to meet with Iranian officials in Instanbul next month.

Israel warns Argentina: Recognizing Palestinian state shatters peace process from Haaretz
Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemned Argentina’s recognition of a Palestinian state and argued that it will hamper the Middle East peace process.  Argentina’s announcement followed Brazil’s declaration of recognition last Friday.

2010 George Mason University Patriot Games: Fourth Time’s a Charm as Donahue Breaks Through

The 2010 George Mason University Patriot Games has just concluded and Extemp Central can report that Nathaniel Donahue of Durham Academy in North Carolina is the champion.  This was the fourth National Points Race tournament final for Donahue this season and after enduring three consecutive second place finishes, he broke into the winner’s circle in Fairfax this weekend.  Donahue’s victory will give him a large lead in the National Points Race going into the Montgomery Bell Extemp Round Robin in January.  Nabeel Zewail of San Marino High School in California finished second and was denied in his bid to win the GMU Round Robin and Patriot Games Tournament in the same year.  Last year’s Wake Forest champion Emily Martin of Boone County High School in Kentucky took third and fellow Round Robin competitors Jason Singh of Green Valley High School in Nevada and Emily Bell of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Missouri finished fourth and sixth respectively.  Ross Slaughter of Walt Whitman High School in Maryland, who was a third place finisher at the Glenbrooks several weeks ago, placed fifth.

New National Points Race rankings, MBA Bracketology, and TOC qual board updates will be posted later in the week.

GMU Extemp Round Robin: Zewail Defeats Constine, Wins Second National Circuit Championship

Today, eight extempers competed in the fifth annual George Mason University Patriot Games Extemp Round Robin.  Seven one-on-one preliminary rounds set up a final between Nabeel Zewail of San Marino High School in California and Ben Constine of Yorktown High School in Virginia, which Zewail won for his second career national circuit championship.  Reports indicate that Catherine Chiodo of Des Moines Roosevelt High School in Iowa finished third.

The following extempers were non-placing participants in this year’s Round Robin:  Emily Bell of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Missouri, Joe Calder of Cary Academy in North Carolina, Emily Martin of Boone County High School in Kentucky, Jason Singh of Green Valley High School in Nevada, and Alex Song of Millburn High School in New Jersey.

George Mason’s Patriot Games Tournament, which is an Extemp TOC qualifier and a third tier tournament in the 2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race, begins tomorrow.  Zewail will attempt to become the third extemper in tournament history to win the Round Robin and the Patriot Games Tournament in the same year.  When Extemp Central gets information about breaks we will make sure to bring them to you as quickly as possible.

House passes legislation to extend only some tax cuts from the Hill
House Democrats voted 234-188 yesterday to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for American families making less than $250,000 a year and individuals making less than $200,000 a year.  Three Republicans sided with Democrats on the bill, but twenty Democrats defected.

Carmel inferno proves Israel can’t afford war with Iran from Haaretz
This interesting article from Haaretz describes how Israel’s emergency services were not prepared for the recent Camel fire and would not be prepared for a war with Iran.

California Gov.-elect Brown to make state’s budget woes public from the Sacramento Bee (courtesy of the Miami Herald)
California Governor-elect Jerry Brown plans to launch a public campaign next week to tell Californians how bad the state’s budget crisis is.  Analysts believe that the campaign is meant to prepare voters for cost cutting measures forthcoming in Brown’s January budget proposal.
