This R&D provides resources on the Libertarian Party.  The party recently chose former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson as its presidential nominee for the second consecutive election cycle and Johnson is hoping to acquire a sizable amount of votes from disaffected Republican and Democratic voters.  The Libertarian Party has traditionally stood for free market ideas along with socially liberal ones toward gay rights and drug legalization.  Johnson will try to acquire 15% support in public polls so that he can become the first independent candidate to appear in a presidential debate since Ross Perot, who managed the feat in 1992.

This R&D provides resources on the return of Avigdor Lieberman to the Israeli government.  Lieberman will serve as defense minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet.  The move is controversial, as Lieberman has a mixed history in supporting the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and leads the secular nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu Party, which draws support from Russian-speaking Israelis.  He has also made polarizing statements in the past concerning the need for loyalty oaths and the treatment of Palestinian refugees.

This R&D provides resources on El Salvador’s crime problem.  The Central American nation had an average of 120 homicides per 100,000 population last year, making it the murder capital of the Americas.  The country is struggling to control criminals and gangs, as the problem has sent refugees to the United States and other parts of Latin America.

This R&D provides resources on President Barack Obama’s new overtime rules.  The Obama administration announced last week issued regulations that require employers to pay overtime to employees that make up to $46,476 per year.  The administration says that it will add billions to the economy, but critics warn that it will be another impediment towards the hiring of new employees in some sectors.

This R&D provides resources on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and growing passenger lines at the nation’s airports.  The TSA is under fire for not effectively handling growing lines at some of the nation’s largest airports in Chicago and Atlanta, although it claims it has not received the funding for additional personnel.  The TSA also says that not enough passengers have signed up for a pre-check program and that is also contributing to the headaches.  Some Republicans on Capitol Hill such as Illinois Senator Mark Kirk have demanded that TSA head Peter Neffenger do more to fix the problems or resign, while others say that airports should privatize their security.

This R&D provides resources on the ongoing impeachment saga engulfing Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.  The Brazilian Senate voted last week to put Rousseff on trial.  She stands accused of illegally manipulating public finances and will now be forced to vacate the presidential palace while lawmakers consider her fate.  The trial might take six months, which could mean that Rousseff will miss being Brazil’s official head of state during the Summer Olympics.  Her supporters charge that she is a victim of a legislative coup.

This R&D provides resources on Kenya’s anti-poaching effort.  The country burned $150 million worth of ivory last week as a statement of the government’s resolve to fight the illegal destruction of national wildlife.  The bonfire consumed the tusks of 8,000 elephants and 343 rhinos that the government seized in recent years.  Asian demand for ivory has grown since the 1990s, providing a lucrative market for poachers.  Critics say that the burning was not needed, that the money made from the ivory could have been used for wildlife conservation, and that it will make poaching worse by removing a significant percentage of ivory from the global market.

This R&D provides resources on Donald Trump’s foreign policy.  The presumptive Republican nominee has raised concerns in the foreign policy community over his plans to make Europe pay for more of its defense, make Mexico pay for a border wall, and his harsh trade rhetoric toward China.  Some pundits warn that if Trump were to win the election that it would lead to more chaos in the world, while his supporters say that an “American first” foreign policy is long overdue.  The 2016 presidential election could come down to Trump’s isolationist message versus presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s more globalist one.
