This R&D provides resources on corporate tax inversions in the United States.  An inversion is where a corporation re-incorporates itself in another location to lower its tax burden.  Corporations usually do this by merging with another entity, as Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical company, recently attempted to do with Allergan, an Irish pharmaceutical firm.  The Obama administration is taking action via the Treasury Department to prevent inversions of this sort and its rules blocked Pfizer’s move.  Critics argue that the best way to prevent more inversions – a practice that has accelerated with American firms since 2014 – is to overhaul the U.S. tax code instead of relying on executive actions.

This R&D provides resources about the use of torture in the war on terrorism.  A Reuters poll last week showed that nearly two-thirds of Americans support the use of torture against suspected terrorists.  Analysts argue that this level of support reflects the San Bernardino, Paris, and Brussels attacks that have taken place over the last four months.  Proponents say that torture can extract vital information that saves lives, but opponents counter that it is not effective and violates America’s founding principles.

This R&D provides resources on nuclear proliferation.  President Barack Obama held a summit of more than fifty world leaders last week in Washington, D.C. concerning the issue.  The summit discussed how to prevent terrorists from acquiring nuclear material and cooperation over nuclear materials.  However, Russia opted not to attend which critics say made it a useless exercise.

This R&D provides resources on Canada’s budget, the first under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.  Departing from the austerity measures of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Trudeau’s budget calls for a $22.5 billion deficit, three times what was initially promised during the 2015 campaign.  The arts, indigenous education, and benefits for veterans received a boost, but new military spending has been delayed.  Like other oil exporters, Canada is attempting to weather a significant reduction in global oil prices and if this continues over the long-term it could force Trudeau’s Liberal government to trim spending in future years.

This R&D covers President Barack Obama’s visit last week to Cuba.  The visit was the first time that an American president visited the island nation in eighty-eight years.  Cuba has had strained relations with the United States since former President Fidel Castro overthrew the dictatorship of General Fulgencio Batista in 1959.  The Obama administration has taken gradual steps to dismantle the American embargo, a move that has been criticized by elements of both major parties.

This R&D provides resources on the possibility of a brokered convention at the Republican National Convention this year.  Donald Trump is the only candidate with a realistic chance of winning the nomination outright, but if he fails to win California’s primary then there is a possibility that the convention could have multiple ballots to choose its candidate.  Trump has said that his voters would not vote for a Republican nominee if he had the nomination taken from him, even going as far as to say that they would riot, but moderate forces in the GOP are looking at the possibility of nominating someone else if Trump does not win the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

This R&D provides an update on Brazil’s turbulent political situation.  Protests are growing against President Dilma Rousseff as Brazil’s Congress weighs whether or not to impeach her.  Meanwhile, Rousseff recently appointed former President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva as her chief of staff, a move that critics say was meant to shield da Silva from prosecution for corruption allegations.  Rousseff and da Silva warn that a coup is imminent, but Brazilians appear angry about growing economic difficulties and losses at the state oil company Petrobras.  The political nightmare is made worse by the upcoming Summer Olympics, which will take place in Rio in August.

This R&D provides resources on Japan’s use of nuclear power.  Since Japan is starved of energy resources it has relied on nuclear power for nearly 40% of its energy needs.  However, the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011 led to a shutdown of the country’s nuclear reactors.  Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pushed for restarting nuclear power plants, arguing that it is a national security issue, but environmentalists say that the only way to keep Japan safe is to move to renewable resources such as solar power.
